Remote Access Madness - I'm going crazy please help

Hi,

So I have been messing around trying to figure out why the remote access does not work.

Yesterday I even changed something I could not reverse internet stopped working and I had to buy a new router today. I tried everything assigning the static ip, port forwarding the port that plex tells me to, setting firewall from the router off, stopping windows defender firewall, avast… etc…

I don’t know what I’m doing wrong …

Today I bought the Motorola AC1900 modem router combo (I’m using the nvidia shield tv for the server and comcast is my provider) I set it up and everything was green and working for the first time. But when I went back to check it again it was not working, when I try to set it up it always goes green for a second and then back to red.

Please help…

Did you setup a port forward for this?

Hi,

Yes I did.

I created the static up, Port forward, deactivate firewall in the router, deactivate windows defender firewall and Avast.

I can’t get it to work, no idea why. I even bought a new modem/router.

Thanks for your help.

Can you post your port forwarding screen shot? From your router…

Yes Nokdim, thanks for your help!!

I still can’t figure this out, can anybody please help?

Thanks.

protocol should only require “TCP”… however it’s unlikely restricting this will suddenly enable the remote access.
you should contact your ISP and ask them if they apply any restrictions from their end.

Is it normal that the IP address in Plex where I enable or disable remote access is different from the ip address that I get when I type Ipconfig on cmd?

no… the local IP address should be the same.

Can you share the first 3 octets of your IP addresses?

You should have an IP on your PC,
An IP on your router that is very similar and a second IP on your router that is not similar to the other 2.

So 3 total IPS.

And what IP does canyouseeme.org shows?

and also check that the local IP 192.168.0.12 is a DHCP Reservation for the Shield and that the current IP is that

Thanks for your help.

3 IPS:
192.168.0
Default Gateway is the same changes the last number
Ethernet Ip: 10.177.45

Canyouseeme I realize it changes if I have my vpn on or off on my laptop
Off: 24.127.162
On: 45.56.154.15

SA200 I don’t really know how to check that.

Thanks again I really appreciate your time.

Just in general:

  1. You must have a static IP address on the PC where the server is.
  2. You must have a modem port enabled and directed to the IP address of the server.
  3. Permitted port on the PC where the server is or firewall off.
  4. You must have a public and static IP address from your ISP.
  5. Your ISP must not block the required port.
  6. It is best to have a manually entered DNS address on the PC with the server.

Internet —> ISP Public IP Adress —> Modem (Port FWD redirection to LAN IP addres) —> Local Static IP addres on server (firewall off)

If all points meet, it must work.

You should be able to check the Nvidia Shield local IP to confirm it is the same as the IP you have setup the port forward to 32400 to.

Once you know what it is and the port forward is setup correctly to that IP, then you go into the router’s DHCP Settings and make sure this IP address which is 192.168.0.x (you need to check if it is 192.168.0.12 as per your port forward), is setup as a DHCP Reservation. The router user manual should tell you how to do that. The alternative is to set it up as static and have the DHCP Range adjusted - eg (example) - static IP Addresses between 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.49 and DHCP Range set to 192.168.0.50 to 192.168.0.253. I always use DHCP Reservation so it is within the DHCP Range but reserved for the Mac Hardware Address of the Ethernet card

Normally remote access settings do not work when vpn in use as it adds another layer.

If your router has 10.177.45 as it’s external IP you need to call your ISP and request a public IP.

So the IP listed as off
Off: 24.127.162
On: 45.56.154.15

Would be the same ip as your router has assigned, and yes do not attempt this with VPN enabled.

Did you get this resolved as ive just got the same modem and it has next to zero info on port forwarding on it?
