Remote Access Problem

Hi! I’ve had trouble for the past year with remote access. Basically, it worked for a week or more, then it didn’t. And all I had to do was either disable and then enable remote access OR simply click “retry” on Manually Specified Port to get it to work just fine again. It was a pain, but it only kept me from actually accessing it once, so I didn’t bother asking.

Recently I’ve had to wipe my computer clean and reinstall everything. NOW It won’t work at all. When I disable and enable it, it briefly says it’s working, but before I can even get a screen print of that, it isn’t working again. I went through all the troubleshooting and made sure everything was correct. It was. I tried to go through the advanced but when it said to get the manual for my router, I gave up! LOL! Mind didn’t come with anything. It was installed by my Internet provider. Besides, I know it works because it worked before, and I haven’t changed anything on the router.

I used the default port (32400) for the manually specified port - and that worked before. Since I just installed everything, it IS updated and new. I’ve read through several other discussions here and none of them quite fit my problem. I’d appreciate any help. I’m not a technological dunce, but I’m not technological brilliant either. I’m probably in that “knows just enough to REALLY mess things up” category…

Thanks!

Tina

Does your new machine have the same internal ip as your old one?

What vendor do you use for ISP?

You will need to get access to your ISP device to check port forwarding settings.

I would recommend the following.

Log into your router.
make a reservation IP address for your computer.
forward the plex port.
On your computer disable any other network adapter untill plex is stable.
In plex ensure the correct network adapter is selected.

side note:
If you have two network cards such as a wired and wireless this will complicate things but can work.If you have a VM software (which adds a Virtual Switch) or VPN software (Which adds a Virtual Network adapter) this will also complicate things. Each network device will add an IP address to your machine and a “interface” or “adapter”. In plex you can choose which adapter you want to use. Make sure it is the one you set the reservation for.

Can you send us a screen shot of your network adapters window and the network settings in plex that show which adapter you are using.

OK, here are a few answers: I do not have a new machine. I just used system restore to reset my computer (and my only choice was to save the documents and files, although I was hoping to wipe it out completely). I do have access to my router. My ISP is viasat. I don’t know what network card(s) I have here, but I can do wired or wireless on this computer. I find nearly nothing in the network settings in plex, and the network adapters window shows more than I can do in a screen shot, so I’ve got it in the text file.

My husband has more knowledge of the system than I do, so he’ll probably be the one to try your suggestions - and he can’t until tomorrow or Wednesday. Until then, here’s a screen shot to show you what’s happening. When I enable remote access, it briefly shows it’s enabled and there’s briefly a green arrow pointing from Internet to public. Then the green arrow turns to a red x and I get the "Not available outside your network.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far!
network adapters.txt (8.2 KB)

I would remove that screen shot with your public IP or at least blank that out.
your shot shows Private is 192.168.1.123 but your txt document shows your IP as 192.168.1.144?

I would only use a wired connection and disable WIFI on that PC.

  1. setup your PC with a static IP like 192.168.1.20
  2. get logged into your viasat router and change your port forward to go to 192.168.1.20
  3. check canyouseeme.org for sccess
  4. enable remote access in Plex

Thanks for your help so far!! I ran into two problems (probably more causing them but two that I see). First, when I make a static IP for my computer, it no longer can access my router settings. Then, when I changed my router settings first, and made the static IP on my computer second, I went to canyouseeme.org and it reads my internet IP, not my computer IP (and won’t let me change it). So what did I do wrong?

your router should have an IP that matches canyouseeme.org.
Your PC will have a private IP that is different.

I am not sure what router settings you changed?!?!

Can you post shots from your router (blanking out the Internet IPs on it)

On the router, I changed the port forwarding IP for Plex - just the last set of digits. I followed the instructions for setting a static IP for my computer here.https://winaero.com/blog/set-static-ip-address-windows-10-settings/ and I used the same number that was used with my port forwarding. Both start with 192. However, when I go to canyouseeme.org, it gives a number that starts with 184. I went into my router to determine where that number came from, and it’s my Internet IP, not my gateway or computer IP…

I’m not sure what you’re asking for shots of on my router. There are many pages, depending on what you’re looking for.

That all sounds right.
Your PC starts with 192
Your gateway on PC starts with 192 and usually ends with .1
Your 184 is your router wan IP

Can you post a shot of your port forwarding from the router?

And on Plex remote access it shows private address 192.168.1.120?

Yes, it does

Any idea why I cannot set a static IP? I can set one, but then I no longer have access to my router… I get a “This site cannot be reached” and suggestions to try " * Checking the connection * Checking the proxy, firewall, and DNS configuration * Running Windows Network Diagnostics"

When I go back to automatic, it works fine.

See below for setup with Google Nest Wifi and Google Fiber box.

For my setup I had to change the LAN IP address. The person from google Wifi said they had issues with numbers being too high.

Router LAN Address” Using example “199.173.86.1”,Change the 86.1 to 0.1. New Router LAN Address “199.173.0.1”. (Lan IP Change)

After working for quite some time, I recently updated the server and now I can’t get remote access to work at all. Any idea what happened?
