Remote Access Not Available Outside of Network

Hello all,

Hope you can assist - these last 2 weeks I’ve had an issue with Plex whereby I’m unable to access my media server outside of the host PC it’s setup on, even within my own network. In the Remote Access setting under the Server page for Plex it states that a private connection is possible (I’m assuming due to the green arrow adjacent the private IP), but the public IP is not (again, assuming, because it has a red cross adjacent to the public IP), but the strange thing is I’m unable to access Plex within my home network.

I set up a port forwarding rule for both private and public IPs within my Router settings in addition to manually specifying a public port, but still have no luck accessing the server outside of the host PC (in addition to tweaking firewall settings on both my router and my PC - I use a paid version of AVG but I don’t believe this is a firewall issue).

I have also tried resetting my router to factory settings, reinstalling Plex, configuring additional network settings on the host PC, all to no avail.

I’m at a loss as to why this isn’t working, and I’m hoping someone is able to provide some help to try and resolve the problem.

I’ve included my Logs folder, apologies for length, was unsure how to sort it out and I’m not even clear on what it useful or not, so I hope for anyone who decides to have a look at this for me is able to forgive the mess that it is lol.

I am having a similar issue.

Server is on a Windows 10 Home machine. It has a static IP, I set port forwarding rules for TCP and UDP.

I also cannot get my Plex to work on my PS3 app, either by standard method, or by manually trying to add it’s static IP address.

Additionally it appears that I cannot access metadata from Movie Database. I have a folder for Music Videos, put “Roy Orbison, Black and White Night” which is listed on the Movie Database site, but it cannot connect to it.

Not sure if all of these issues are related, but I suspect they are somehow.

I am using Version 1.7.3.3937, and have Plex Pass. I also use the DVR function with HD Homerun.

Any help would be appreciated!

Furthermore I get this message when I open my plex browser on the VERY SAME MACHINE as my Plex Server??

“You are not connected directly to #### Plex so streaming quality may be limited. You may be able to connect directly to this server by changing your home network settings.”

What home network settings would I need to change to access my Plex Server if I am on the Plex Server? I’m confused by this.

I can also confirm that my port forwarding was working fine prior to this update

To address things from easiest to hardest:

Automatic is just that… Fully automatic in Settings - Server - Remote Access. If you’ve errors there, the Manual port forwarding below

Remote Access checklist for manual ‘static port forwarding’

  1. Static IP for the Plex server
  2. Create a manual port forwarding rule (some call it ‘Virtual server’) from inbound 32400 to the IP of your server also at 32400… Proto: TCP
  3. Firewall ports known open (32400 is the only port required for remote).
  4. Test on the computer, even if not the PMS server. canyouseeme.org is a great test of this. Test port 32400

I don’t recommend using 32400 for the external port, since it’s a pretty well known port that people scan for often.

Good point… For best security, pick something totally bizarre to start. the last 5 digits of a telephone number work IF the resulting number is < 65535

  • Anything on your LAN should always have direct access.

Hi ChuckPA, I appreciate you taking the time to respond. Whilst I’m aware everything on my LAN should have direct access to the server, unfortunately it appears that none of my devices do have direct access; even when I navigate to the Plex.tv portal via the web app, it only provides me with indirect access on the host PC, and as mentioned previously none of the external devices on my network can even see the server.

  1. Test on the computer, even if not the PMS server. canyouseeme.org is a great test of this. Test port 32400

Strange that the tests ran on that website can’t see the ports opened, yet the ports have been manually enabled within AVG Firewall and exceptions made within the router… could this possibly be a fault with the router?

If that’s the case, however, how come so many other people have responded in this thread claiming to have the same issue as myself?

I hope you’re able to assist further…

Ahhh, AVG. That explains quite a lot actually. The AVG firewall has history mucking up things with Plex. No real solutions that I remember, but I know there are threads with Plex Server and AVG. If you search around you should find a few, maybe they can help resolve the problem. And definitely don’t use port 32400.

Hi there, new forum member here, and new Plex member.

I’m having the similar issue as stated above. I’ve only got Windows Firewall and the firewall provided on my router from my ISP (CenturyLink).

Streaming has been great, until recently that my server wasn’t detected. I was beginning to think that something had gone wrong with my Internet. Only, I can remote connect to the server using TeamViewer, and even locally using TightVNC.

I haven’t changed anything, and not sure what happened. I spent about 3 days trying to figure it out, then decided to come to the forums to find this thread.

What I had to do to make my server work, was set up DMZ hosting, setting my server outside the network. I also set up port forwarding (as per this thread), and still no success.

I don’t want to thread hijack, however, I do want it to be known that you’re not the only one.

I for some reason thought that maybe my ISP had blocked port 32400, but when I checked out that website mentioned earlier, it sees the service running on that port.

I’m running Version 1.5.5.3634, and it claims to be up to date (clicking check for updates just renders up to date)

I was convinced this wasn’t a firewall issue due to having meticulously combed through the permissions and exclusion lists, but turns out there was a setting I had missed, and I found it from here:

Appreciate the support, I hope the rest of you guys are able to figure out your issue (perhaps try to follow the advice in the final post of the link above as a guideline towards your own firewall? Mayhaps that is your issue  ).

Wow… OK. I have looked at a lot of this and have tried much of it, still no joy.

I also have AVG, and just looked at the thread above, followed all of it’s steps on it, and still cannot get it to work. I did the canyouseeme scan and it failed on several ports including port 80?

I did a few trace routes, and they all seemed to work with some timeouts. The one to 47.41.133.239 was only one hop and didn’t even use my router? Does that mean that the port IS open, but something local (AVG) is blocking Plex from using it?

I am not sure what setting I haven’t looked at on AVG.
There are rules created that were installed (I believe) when Plex was installed,
I made a general exception for Plex in my AVG Internet Security
I changed all of the network profiles from “Public” to “Private”

Maybe I need to get on that AVG forum and ask them for assistance since it is likely caused by their product?

Thanks in advance.

OK, I appologize, it is working now, I forgot to check something. Upon reloading of the server settings, everything is great.
