Remote Access not working! I've tried everything!

Google WiFi & Plex Remote Access Question

Hi All,

I’m hoping someone can help me. I’ve spent weeks trying to get my remote access for Plex back working. I’ve read and re-read every article I can find on the topic and I am now out of ideas.

I have bridged my ISP router, so my WiFi is now only coming from my Google WiFi. I have done this to try get rid of the double-Nat issue.

I have set up port forwarding 32400 > 32400 from the google WiFi app and also changed from Google’s dns to my isp’s dns. I have also tried various other external ports (including a range) to 32400.

I have turned off both the router firewall and the computer firewall.

I’ve tried stabilise my DNS with Duck DNS, thanks to a great suggestion on a Facebook forum.

I’ve toggled UPnP on/off multiple times and then tried resetting.

My plex server Ip has a DHCP IP reservation.

I have powercycled my computer and Router.

I’ve tried taking the services.bundle out of the plug-in folder temporarily as suggested by a really nice guy who said it worked for him.

My Plex remote access screen sometimes says “available outside your network” but has never worked since google WiFi. When I use a 3rd party to check if my port is really open, it says it’s not. However the google WiFi settings says it is. I presume my problem lies somewhere here but not sure what I can even try to fix it.

I don’t think this is relevant but just incase, I am based in Dublin, Ireland, my ISP is with Eircom 80/20mb/s and my Plex server is on a Windows 10 laptop. My ISP Router is ZXYEL F1000 and it is bridged to Google Mesh WIFI.

Any help or suggestions are extremely welcome. Thank you.

Consider the routers / Google WiFi are like doors… from what you describe, you’ve opened the door to your condo – while keeping the door to your house locked.

The “door” through which the outside (e.g. a remote Plex client) can access the Plex Media Server within your home network is the ISP router.
That’s the one where you either have to enable UPnP or a manual port forward (personally I’d go with the port forward).

The Google WiFi is an extension of your home network – but it solely operates inside your home network!

Long story short…
try the following:

  1. disable the DHCP server in the Google WIFI settings as well as any port forwards or alternate DNS settings
  2. activate the DHCP server in your ISP router and assign a static IP to the machine hosting the Plex Media Server (IP reservation)
  3. enable the port forward on your ISP router
  4. test if you can reach it from the outside (e.g. using canyouseeme.org)

holestly the easiest thing to install is google remote desktop, you can login from anywhere it goes through your google account and its fast as hell, even faster than VLC or team viewer. Its pretty amazing thats what Im using when I need to get on the server

Thanks Tom for the suggestion.

I’ll try it when I’m home tonight. Off the top of my head though this would lead to a double NAT situation? Am I missing something?

Thanks Mini-Server,

This solution works for me as an individual, but unfortunately I want my family to be able to use my server too.

Appreciate the response.

You’ll need to switch the roles of your ISP router and the Google WIFI in your network. With the ISP router assigning your local IP addresses and the Google WIFI in Bridge mode there should be no conflict.
