Hi,
I’ve been running a Plex server on Ubuntu (currently 18.04) for many years. I’ve used different routers, modems, etc so I am very familiar with the setup for remote access.
I just got a new modem/router combo (Motorola MG8702) and I’m having issues with Remote Access. I have enabled UPnP. I have my Plex server on a reserved IP. I’ve tried both UPnP and manual forwarding of 32400.
In each case when I enable remote access, it will say fully accessible but then about 10 seconds later it the status will switch to not remotely accessible.
I just got it to work by making my Plex server IP the DMZ machine on my router. Does that mean it is a router firewall issue? I am allowing all services and ports on the firewall and protection is set to “low”.
I imagine there is a security risk with my Plex being DMZ? Is there a better way to do this?
Same issue here, but in my case, it does not affect remote access as far as 32400 is accessible (even with plex switch to “not remotely accessible status”).
In fact, my plex server was running for ages without issues and then suddenly (like a few days back) it stopped working and it only works (as the OP said) when I put it in DMZ mode on the router.
So I ask myself, is this an issue with a recent plex server update or is this some update on the router side?
As I didn’t change any settings on my router
Yes. That’s a bad idea. Putting any computer in a DMZ is a bad idea. It exposes the OS and all services on that computer directly to the Internet.
Plex specifically has a number of services that aren’t intended to be exposed directly to the Internet. And there have been security issues in Plex that only became significant when hosts were put directly on the Internet or in a DMZ.
I know it’s been a little while, but are you still having remote access issues?
