Like so Many People remote access suddenly doesn't work anymore

Server Version#: 1.18.8.2527
Player Version#:across all players on OS X, iOS, Android

Hi,
i had plex running remote access behind torguard vpn (to avoid isp upload throttling thus interrupted remote playbacks) with port 32400 forwarded on my router and everything worked great for months.
Suddenly late december 2019 remote access started to refuse to work with vpn but was still working without vpn. no os update, just plex server update.
now since a week or so i can’t have remote access working at all.
so i decided to forget the vpn for the moment and try to get remote access to work on it’s own
and start another ticketPlex Media Server Logs_2020-03-15_13-45-02.zip (2.6 MB) Plex Media Server Logs_2020-03-15_13-42-18.zip (2.6 MB) for the vpn later.

whether i manually force port 32400 or not remote access will not connect or pretend it’s connected for a few seconds and then shows no connection.
Also i use plex with Sonnos and i can’t access my library through sonnos anymore, it sees plex and proposes podcasts but no access to my personal lib…

i’m joining logs that i downloaded, 1st after booting plex 2nd after trying to turn on manual port on and off a few times.
also joining photos of the router port forwarding.
Keep in mind that those settings worked perfectly until end of december.

thanks in advance for your help

just to say, i read a bunch of threads with similar problems and there doesn’t seem to be one fix that works for all, some people reverted to an earlier version of plex server and that worked for them other people had issues with their routers config or victime of something changed by their isp.
i tried going several server versions back and that didn’t work out for me.
one thing i can say is that for some reason i can’t see 32400 open on the open port check tool anymore…
not good enough with this kind of things to understand what is going on…

when i test to see if 17112 is open it says yes but i didn’t forward it on my router and remote access doesn’t work…
completly lost…

help!!!

Your configuration is incorrect. To fix that, you can try any of the options bellow:

  • Enable UPnP on your router and then deactivate / activate remote access on Plex (recommended);
  • On Plex, specify the public port manually to 32400 and then deactivate / activate remote access on Plex;
  • Don’t touch your Plex settings, and on your router change external port start/end to 17112.

These configurations are not complementary, they are different solutions to the same problem.

hi and thank you for your reply.

UPnP has always been on,
i’ve tried manual port 32400 on and off many times
turning remote access on and off many times as well
and tried forwarding 17112.
i also tried forwarding port 50000 and 32417 and force them manually

but nothing works…
nothing works

What’s the operation system you are running Plex server on?

mac os high sierra 10.13.6
worked perfectly so far and i tried downgrading as far as the beginning of december on the server versions that didn’t change anything
i’m back on the last version of the server

Type into spotlight “Network utility”, should be top of list. Check if your Public Forwarded port is open with port scan?

Go to your System Preferences/ Security & Privacy/ Firewall /options ( Admin access required)

Check if the following are enabled, these must be enabled Prior to Installing Plex Media Server as the Firewall Options pane will say Allow but in reality are not.

Last year I got sucked in on a security article and a piece of software suggesting not to have these enabled. The above was my solution.

Once completed and re installed the Plex Media Server, restart your Router and your computer and try to see if remote works.

My plex server had the same issue after running on rails for months without any issue, today i tried the following stuff.

Checking the online ip, port forward troubleshooting for half an hour, changing the server ip, trying to move the server to another network.

Tried turning off UPnP -> Booom it works!

hi,

thank you very much,

thanks for the port finder tip, relevant ports seem to be open on the internal ip
nothing shows on the external ip… is it normal?

firewall not on…

what part exactly did do you think made it work,
did you reset everything back to normal and then turned off UPnP?
or was it a mix of things??

i just realized that apparently when vpn off and manual port select off i can reach my server remotely even if remote access says not working.
no message it being bounced off plex servers for help so i guess it’s a straight connection???

i’m lost…

Hi Gregorieman,
I did all of the stuff, but it instantly worked after turning off UPnP and has been working since for the last past hours withour any issues.

Try do this yourself, restart the router and after that you can try turn it on if it still does not work, then see if it comes online once again.

Tobi4775, I have said previously the UPnP is a basket of hurt on some Routers. This is now evidence of just one serious flaw, so now I have said this all hell will come down on me again. I don’t care…

Just use Manual port forwarding, forget using UPnP. All this crap about security by obscurity is just a PITA view.

Absolute same… Plex server worked for 1yr + and all of a sudden after update says it can be accessed externally but in reality it couldnt by multiple devices on multiple networks… Disabling UPnP Fixed the issue for me… SO MANY ISSUES in the last 6 months sucks paying monthly for software that I have to rebuild the library multiple times taking an extreme amount of time to update.

Hi there!

@SE56 and @fireupchips Nice to hear that it is not only me experiencing that bug, Here in DK the biggest providers use Sagemcom, I’ve seen this specific problem on a lot of their routers, trust me.

  1. Luckily for me I have a Ubiquiti USG behind that can use that functionality and I was playing a bit around with it today, tried enabling the UPnP on this device instead, still working perfectly without interrupting my services.
  2. So truly this must be an issue on some brand routers that it will start to interrupt at some point.

Hi Tobi,
glad you mentioned Ubiquiti are very good Enterprise Grade Routers. Most users or ISP provided Routers are consumer grade as normally there part of a package.
