Remote Access Service

I’ve been having trouble the past couple of years where my Plex Media server randomly will loose it’s DNLA access. I have to go to settings and re-start the service. It would be nice if it had a switch (Like most Windows services) to restart after it senses it is no longer connected. Have restart, but stop after 2 attempts so the admin can investigate further. Thanks. -Brian

Remote access in Plex has nothing to do with DLNA. DLNA cannot be used remotely, because it doesn’t know user authentication and will only use broadcast packets which don’t travel beyond the local network.

Sounds like manual portforwarding will solve this for you.

I should have never mentioned dnla. My bad. I’ve tried both fixed and auto on remote access. My thinking is if the PMS is aware enough to sense it is connected or not, to auto-restart makes sense seeing disconnect is too random to troubleshoot (I reviewed the FAQ). Unless there is a way of logging disconnects don’t know where else to go. If I can clarify further, please let me know. Thanks. -Brian

As per Otto‘s response… your description implies there might be a problem with your server changing its local ip address (e.g. if you haven’t configured a local port reservation) or Plex taking a while to recognize a change with your WAN connection (e.g. if UPnP keeps allocating a new external port or the router’s WAN IP address is frequently changing).

Your described restart/recheck of remote access will recognize and re-apply such changes… it should still be easily fixable to avoid the need to manually trigger this.

Server is static and dedicated. Router is google fiber provided. Port forwarding to the the server. Port exceptions in firewall. I host web and irc that also get port forwarding and never have issues. I am mystified why the remote access works 90% of the time. If there was a consistent pattern to it going offline I wouldn’t be here. I bought my pass in 2015 and until recent never had this glitch.
So, from what I’m hearing is that remote access will re-enable by its self? Thanks for your help. -Brian

See if you have any form of power saving active on any of the involved network adapters.
(e.g. reducing link speed when idle, “Power-efficient Ethernet”, allowing the network adapter to be put into sleep mode etc.)
These are very often implemented in a way which makes any “server”-like apps behaving very errantly.
