Remote Access snaps from Fully accessible, unreachable outside your network

Server Version#: 1.13.5.5332
Player Version#: All

Log into Plex server
Settings
Remote Access
Remote access is not available
I disable/enable remote access
Remote access snaps from green (accessible) to red (inaccessible) once done with connection retry

I have open NAT and UPnP enabled on my router.
This feature worked up until recently. Did an update hose this?

I have the same issue but no one has been able to help me…

I suspect from the other threads on this subject (New update (Version 1.13.5.5332) causing failed remote access) (REMOTE ACCESS SOLUTION? Release old version of Plex Server?) that we might be looking at a Plex Server issue directly.

It appears as though when a client tries to connect to a user’s Plex Server, the traffic is directed to Plex HQ, then re-directs the user to the host. The problem with that is Plex HQ is essentially 'man-in-the-middle’ing us and not allowing for direct connections.

Are there any Plex personnel on these forums that can help clear this up?

[editing to add]: This thread: Plex Server version 1.13.5.5332 on QNAP causes Remote Access to cease seems to be getting some good info on workaround (looks like loading an earlier version might be the way, but in my case I found out that there was a newer version available via the website that my server didn’t see in its upgrade path).

Hope that helps!

Ended up specifying a manually assigned port to work around this issue, with the port forwarded through my router.

Interesting. My resolution was a little different (but hopefully it will help someone else here):

  1. Went to the Plex site here: https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/ and downloaded the current version (1.13.8.5388-509720743 Released Sept 14, 2018)

  2. Uninstalled my Plex Media Server entirely, and rebooted the host machine.

  3. Installed the current version (my old version was a 1.12.5.* version and didn’t recognize there were updates available when trying to update through the app on the server itself).

  4. Following the install I saw that my NAS no longer showed up as “Available” when I tried to play something, I solved this by attempting to repair the database (following the instructions linked here: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201100678-repair-a-corrupt-database/ )

  5. Following the database repair I shut down the Plex Media Server and the NAS (Drobo) then brought the server back up, then the NAS (and confirmed they were both mapped as a network location, and as a persistently mapped local drive.

  6. I removed the “Specify a port” setting from my Plex server, although I’m not sure this was necessary. I do have port forwarding configured properly.

One thing that I noticed that was odd was my local IP address was fluctuating back and forth between two different IP addresses. I made sure that both of those IP addresses were set to forward to the Plex server. I think this was responsible for some of the intermittant problems connecting I had previously.

Doing a fresh install of plex is such a hassle though. You lose all your settings. Including those of subtitles for individual films. Meaning you have to go back to each movie you want the subtitles on for and set turn them on.

What seems to unique about mine that I haven’t seen anyone mention yet is that if my remote access isn’t working, I remote into the server and all I have to do is go to setting>remote access and without clicking anything I will turn green and start working again.

Not sure I understand what you are saying. By merely entering the Remote Access page in Settings, the green check mark appears and Remote Access is restored?
Regardless I recommend manually specifying a port on Plex (just use the default that appears when you switch to manual) and then opening a port on your home router. This solves the issue for good.

I noticed that as well, but I wasn’t sure if it was a display issue where it just took a minute to ‘wake up’. One of the things I did as well that may have contributed to my eventual success was installing the ‘run Plex as a Service’ (found on the forums here).
