Context: My living situation has a main router for the whole place, an ASUS RT-AC5300, and for my own private network I am using a GL-MV1000 VPN router (for privacy and security)
I cannot get remote access to properly connect to the internet. On the main ASUS router, I have tried both a port forward to the IP of the GL router and DMZ but neither has worked. I have the port forwarding to the server itself set up on the GL router and all the necessary Windows firewall inbound and outbound rules set.
I have also tried disabling the VPN for the IP of the server so that it is using the public IP of the ASUS router, but that didn’t work either.
I do not have the double NAT error that I have seen other people with this situation post about, when comparing the addresses they are the same.
The error I receive is between the internet and public facing IP address, when I use either the ASUS’s public facing IP given by the ISP or my VPN providers public facing IP.
This is the port forward in the GL VPN router (the IP is static for the server, and this port foward applies whether the VPN is connected or not). The same port forward is in the ASUS router, just for the routers IP address, which is also static.
What I am afriad I may have to do is just connect the server directly to the ASUS router to get remote access to work, and I will have to use a KVM to control it instead of remote desktop.
Any help is appreciated, thank you.
