Remote Access very slow

Server Version#: 4.53.0
Player Version#:

Hi,
Sorry for creating a new post, there are already a few post regarding the same problem, but I couldn’t find a solution on them.

I’m having issues using remote play when my computer is not at home. Everything works fine when my computer is on the same network as the NVIDIA shield connected to my LG TV. But I’m out (with my computer), and my parents try to see a movie, it keeps pausing every 5 seconds. Both internet connections are pretty good, at my home ( where the shield and tv are) I’ve got 200/100 Mbs, and shield is connected by cable. And when I’m with my computer out, the connection is 100/100Mbs, but getting 98Mbs upload, connected wirelessly. I’ve tried to remove secure connections, but it kept the same. On Internet streaming Video Quality, I’ve set it to max, as the result is for the movie to play at 4k with atmos, as it normally would over local network.

Is there any setting that I’m missing? Any idea what could be causing this?
Thank you a lot in advance,
Best Regards,
Tiago Silva

I’m not sure I fully understood your setup… which of your devices is hosting the Plex Media Server? Is it the Nvidia Shield which stays in your home network or the Windows pc/notebook you take along – or both?

When you experience that pausing of your video playback… what information is showing in the “now playing” tile for that playback on the Plex server dashboard? – I’m particularly interested if it’s showing as “remote” or “indirect” streaming, any transcoding?

As for 4K streaming – keep in mind 4K media can easily exceed 100 Mbps (certainly in peaks, sometimes also as an average bitrate).

Hi @tom80H

Sorry if I was not clear. My setup is: The Plex Media Server is hosted on my laptop which is mostly at the same network as the Nvidia Shield (which is just used to play series/movies on the lg tv), but sometimes its not, and that’s when the slowliness starts.

Following your suggestion, I’ve seen that is actually transcoding, I had no idea it was doing that!

Is that the reason that is causing this? Could you guide me on where to change the settings to Direct Play?

Thank you a lot once again!

Assuming the Plex client on your Nvidia Shield can play this movie directly… check out:
Settings > Video Quality > Remote Streaming

By default this is set to 720p at a relatively low bitrate. For an “immobile” client located inside your home network, setting it to max/original quality should be ok (probably not a good idea on a metered connection / data plan).

I’ve done that, and it indeed shows direct play now, and the speed went up to 51Mb/s
Capture

But sadly, it still freezes to buffer every 5 seconds more or less. Is there any other setting I can change to improve this situation? Or is it just hopeless to remote stream a 4k movie?

Thank you

Let’s say there’s a lot of factors and roadbumps along that stream that can cause such issues (e.g. your upload speed being 100 Mbps doesn’t guarantee that transfer speed with every party involved in transferring your data packages :frowning: ).
Do you get the same hiccups using different clients?

Actually is the first time I’ve tried to remote stream, so there is no way to know if this happened on another previous version or not. Or do you mean if I tried using different streaming softwares? If so, I did not try, because so far, Plex is the only streaming service I can get dolby atmos to reproduce on my TV!

I was referring to Plex on your Nvidia Shield vs. a different device running a Plex client application (e.g. Plex on Roku, Apple TV, on a desktop …)
