When my windows server is running a VPN i i cannot access the server remotely via PS3 or Apple TV however i have no issues accessing the content via my iPhone and cannot understand why?
Unless you configure the VPN a specific way, it redirects all the server traffic to a remote endpoint which is no longer local to the PS3 or Apple TV.
Thanks for coming back to me, it doesn’t make sense that when my server is connected to a VPN I can access the content remotely on my iPhone, all other devices have an issue. I would expect my iPhone to behave in the same way?
The Iphone is outside your home network where the VPN’s endpoint is.
The local devices can’t negotiate a connection out the router to the VPN ip, through the VPN to the server and back.
Either run your VPN on another machine/docker/vm or setup a split tunnel that excludes Plex.
That the thing, the PS4 & Apple TV are also outside of my home network and are remote devices which is why i cannot understand why and how my iPhone can access the server, i would expect all devices to act in the same way
is it possible that your VPN is the connection for your iphone… either thur an app or something…
sounds to me like your iphone is tunneled to your VPN then the internet and your other devices are not in the same tunnel.
