Remote Access

Please help! I have been having fits trying to have Remote Access but to no success. I even bought a new laptop with Windows 10 and upgraded my router to a Linksys AC1200. I did a port forward command and nothing. I deleted McAfee and use use AVG but still nothing. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated.

A plexpass subscription is not require for remote access

Thanks. Would you have any ideas on my previous post on not being able to have remote access?

Have you followed the troubleshooting steps here?

https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200931138-Troubleshooting-Remote-Access

Yes, many times. Do I need to have a dedicated static IP address for it to work?

Did you establish a port forward and static IP on your ISP provided modem
to your new router?

A few things:

  1. Set up a static IP on the Plex server computer. You can do this by DHCP reservation on your router, or by manually assigning an IP address in the NIC/IPv4 properties. If you do it manually, make sure it is outside the DHCP scope that your router picks from.
  2. Check for double NAT. Look at the WAN IP of your router, then go to http://www.whatsmyip.org and look at the IP that’s reported. If they are different, you have a double NAT problem and we will have an additional step that must be done.
  3. Create a manual port forward rule on your router for external port 45612, internal port 32400, protocol TCP, pointing to your Plex server IP. Also verify that port forwarding is enabled on the router.
  4. In the Plex server settings, in remote access, enable remote access, then tick the box next to manual port and enter 45612 in the box, click apply/retry.

I tried everything above but nothing. Do I have to get my internet provider to create a static IP address?

No, there’s no requirement to have a static IP (external). http://www.canyouseeme.org/ does this webpage show your port as open or not?

It says error on port 80. How do I open it up?

Do you have a double NAT?

You don’t check port 80 - you check the port you used for port forwarding. If you followed my example, that is 45612.

I appreciate your help but I’m not doing something right. The port tool check says error no route to host and I followed your instructions above. I made a port forward rule on my router for external port 45612 and internal 32400. I’m missing a step somewhere.

No double NAT. Only a wifi modem, Linksys EA6100 AC1200. Windows 10

Did you check and verify you do not have double NAT?

Just verified and no double NAT? I feel like just canceling my plex and forgetting all of this.

No need for any port tool - just using http://canyouseeme.org and typing 45612 in the box where it is initially set to 80

I am afraid when remote access fails to work - one does need to have some patience in troubleshooting and normally one would be expected to provide screenshots of the whole setup and debug Plex Media Server.log after restarting the server and retrying the remote access with the manually specified port of 45612 set.

Screenshots that are relevant:

  • evidence that your local ip for the server is static outside dhcp range or dhcp reserved within the router
(router dhcp settings + server ip configuration info)
  • evidence to confirm that mtu size is 1500 or less within router / network card
  • port forward table showing setup
  • confirmation that upnp table does not have duplicate routes to 32400 affecting the NAT operation
  • remote access show advanced settings for PMS confirming manually specify port ticked and 45612 entered

I can send whatever is needed but where is the attachment clip to send a screenshot. Let me know what you need from me and I will send it. I really do appreciate all the time you have taken to respond.

Right here.

See attached open port

No route to host is not the same as a connection timed out or a closed port message. Basically there is no known path for the packets to travel to get to the destination. I suggest you completely uninstall AVG, and also search for McAfee and AVG removal tools, because it’s very possible that uninstalling did not fix the firewall changes that McAfee definitely did to your system.
