Remote Access

I have what are (hopefully) two simple questions. I have a Plex server running on my Apple computer with an external drive. I access the server via my in home network on a Roku. Works wonderfully. Now the question. I have been allowing access to my server by a friend who loves in another location. It works fairly reliably (I believe) because I have had issues with double NAT and blocked ISP ports. Last night I resolved the double NAT issue and got my ISP to unblock the port I was using. Server setting show remote access is enabled.

Since I made the changes my friend is no longer able to access the server. A couple of questions:

  • Do I need to have a Plex pass for this to work? Reading the Plex Pass docs it doesn’t appear so. I tried Plex Pass for a month (while everything was sort of working). It has since expired.

  • I am using a manually specified public port. Is there anything special I need to do on my friend’s Roku to access the server?

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. Much appreciated.

No, you don’t need a Plex Pass for remote access.

Since I made the changes my friend is no longer able to access the server.

What do you mean? Does your friend see the server but can’t access it or they don’t even see the server.

If the former, double check your sharing settings and make sure they do have access to the libraries you want them to have access to.

If the latter, you said your Plex Pass expired. Did you possibly have them as a managed user under Plex Home? This gets removed when you Plex Pass expires. Have them create a new regular Plex account and reshare your server with them.
