So after upgrading my speed with my carries and using a new router that they gave me. FIOS G1100 router, whenever I remote connect I am seeing the green key icon (which I always did) next to the plex server on the plex webapp, but next to it, it started saying “Indirect”
I am able to see everything fine, but I am curious why this started happening. I have allow remote connections enabled as well. How can I correct this to the way it was? is the only way to forward a port to my server? I would rather not have to do that for security issues? Especially since everything was working fine before. Would really appreciate some help. This explained why I am transcoding a lot on remote connections as they’re now limited to 2Mbps! I couldn’t figure it out.
thanks but I’m confused. Isn’t it bad for my network security to have to open up a port to my server, which I didn’t have to do before?
also, I’m a bit confused with the language you’re using, specifically the coupling part. Are you saying there are two different ways to achieve this? And that this is done in the firewall menu of the router, correct?
I assumed you wanted to have remote access feature enabled for your server. Remote access would be through a public port that would be opened in your router and forwarded to local port 32400. External Access to the server is of course restricted to only authenticated sessions - authenticated by a plex.tv user account and password
When you enable remote access there are two ways of opening the port, one is automatic and uses a dynamically assigned uPNP port that would get routed to 32400. The second method would by you deciding which public port to open and you manually specify that port in the server remote access settings. This would need you to ensure that the local IP address of the server is dhcp reserved or static outside dhcp range and to have created a port forward rule in the router to forward the tcp public port you selected to local port 32400 and assign it to the local ip addrsss of the server
If remote access is enabled but is not working because of issue with the configuration then plex clients would attempt to use a Plex Relay which would show as indirect
Right, I do want to access it remotely, I was just saying that I never had to do that before. I guess you’re saying that the port was opened before anyway, just that it was done automatically and I need to do it manually now?
I’ll attempt to do this today, hopefully it will fix things. Thanks so much!
I’m confused with this part. Have the router window opened under the firewall tab.
I added Destination ports 32400, TCP Any–>32,400
What do you mean by coupled with "Manually Specify Port of 32400"
Is that something that needs to be done in addition to this " Destination Ports = 32400 and Forward to Port = Same as incoming port"?
I only did the first part and added destination ports 32400 and TCP Any–>32,400. I added that under applied rules like it is shown the screenshot you shared with me
It turns out that it is still not working and is showing “Indirect” for the server when connecting from an outside network. I feel like it worked that day, but apparently it is still saying “Indirect.” I forwarded port 32400 as described above. It seems like you mentioned 2 methods to this. I’m not very clear on the other one, is it a different port that I need to forward?
Also, a pi-hole is on the same network with the DNS of the router pointing to the pi-hole. Not sure if that could have something to do with it?
could be. I have no experience of using that and how it changes - but having a proxy which in effect this is what is done here would have a bearing
meaning you changed from the tick box being unticked to it being ticked?
If there is a port forward of tcp port 32400 to 32400 then the tick box needs to be ticked and the public port 32400 showing the box and a retry and may also need to re-enable remote access in the settings
PS: Are you really running on old PMS version 1.9.7.4460-a39b25852 ? This is what is showing on plex.tv
The current release is 1.14.0.5487 beta and 1.14.0.5470 public
that was it. It automatically disabled remote access once I ticked on the check box “manually specify public port” That was not ticked before. When I ticked it on today (I did this remotely) I lost all connection with the server. When I accessed it locally just now I see that it disabled remote access, which I now enabled.
Wow yes. Running Version 1.9.7.4460-a39b25852. I have plex pass and thouht I had (auto update to the plexpass release) checked off somewhere. That must have been on my plex player. Thanks so much for pointing it out. Updating now, will get back to you
Okay so “check for updates” is grayed out and won’t let me click on it. Well, it’s not gray but it’s dark yellow and it won’t let me click, I could only click on “what’s new” right next to it
You need to open a port for remote access. I’m guessing in your previous router you were getting access via upnp which is actually less secure. This is better.
I was lucky enough to have fios fiber for years. It’s glorius but the router is a bit of a learning curve.
I’m having the same issue. For some reason PLEX had not been updating and would not allow me to do it. I uninstalled and redownloaded and now have the current version but it will not allow remote access. I have manually port forwarded and when I click enable remote access it connects, everything looks good, and then flashes to not available.
According to plex.tv info, your server is setup for remote access. If there is an issue could you go to the setting page for remote access and refresh the browser and then capture the server logs
I was able to get it to work by turning off my VPN, restarting the remote access and then restarting my VPN. Not sure why it wouldn’t initiate with the VPN active though.
