Is there a way to have remote users connect to my servers not using Plex TV connection…
but still using their current clients, or is there substitute clients that would work…
What do you mean?
Usually, remote connections are directly from server to client.
plex.tv is only acting as a user authenticator and DynDNS-like service in one.
Only if the server is not directly accessible, the client will fall back to a Relay connection, which then routes the data over some datacentre. (But is still fully encrypted.)
Can my servers work with remote connection without that … authentication DynDNS-like service or a relay connection.
Only if you:
- disable all user authentication (i.e. sign your server out of its plex.tv account)
- sign out all the clients out of their plex.tv accounts
- set up a DynDNS-like service for your server
- set up a VPN to make all your remote clients appear as if they were in the local network of the server
Doing so is unsupported, because it has some massive drawbacks:
- You will have no way to differentiate between users. All playback progress and played/unplayed status will be attributed to the admin user.
- The clients won’t be able to switch their Direct Play/Transcode preferences automatically, depending on the used connection, since they will always believe they are in the same local network as the server.
- some client types won’t be usable at all (those which don’t allow manually setting the server IP in their preferences)
