Remote LG-TV indirect playback

I share my Plex server with a friend who has an LG 49UJ635V-ZF and notice he is only getting 2mb transcode streams indirectly. My media server is setup correctly for external access (have tried both dynamic and direct port translation but makes no difference). It works fine from my iPhone over cellular so it must be a client issue.

Any pointers as to why he is indirect ?
