Remote Media Management

Apologies if this is covered elsewhere – I couldn’t find anything but a couple stalled discussions from 2014.

When I have neither physical access to a Plex server, nor access to shared drivers/folders over a local network, I would still love to be able to upload new media to the server and/or move things around on the server. The existing Plex interface will already let me DELETE media, but that’s all.

In other discussions I’ve found, people have suggested an ftp server and although that might work (and even be easy for some) it seems to me that Plex (or maybe an option Plex plug-in?) could offer some basic server file management functionality.

Plex is the best candidate to handle media management tasks such as MOVING media from one library to another so that things like thumbnail references and anything else Plex may have generated for the media may remain connected (and ftp doesn’t usually support file moves anyway). Media UPLOAD would be a very nice feature that would allow, for example, uploading new family videos to the grandparent’s Plex server, even though the grandparents live a thousand miles away (full disclosure: that’s my situation, by the way).

The Plex web client has already established a secure (I hope!) link with the remote Plex server, so why shouldn’t it have (or provide via plug-in) something like a file manager that allows media management?

If this already exists in some fashion, please, PLEASE let me know! If not, maybe we can make it happen?

No, there is not a way to do what you want using Plex. Feel free to submit a feature request.

How about setting up a VPN with SAMBA, then you can mange your content like a local drive.

Well, my Plex Server is running on Windows 10, so I don’t think I need SAMBA. Can you recommend a VPN product that is as easy to install and set up as Plex that doesn’t require anything to be installed on the client and is easily accessible through a browser interface (like Plex)?

For linux i would use openvpn, easy to set up and mange, for windows i have used Softether in the past, and works fine

You might look at TeamViewer. I have recently started playing with it for reasons similar to your own. It allows you to have remote desktop control similar to Windows RDC on a local network. You can also transfer files. There are versions for multiple platforms.

Thanks, I’ll take a look at both recommendations as partial (and overly complex and kludgy) workarounds. (NOTE: I only mean complex and kludgy in relation to the tiny problem I and trying to solve, not the VPN products intended purpose, which I believe to be rather massive overkill for what I need, while still lacking one important feature I want – Plex integration.)

However, neither of them helps with the larger issue of overall Plex media management. Yes, Plex will eventually “recover” after I manually move files around from outside, but why should it NEED to do that? If Plex can already READ and DELETE, media files, how much more works is it really to also allow it to support MOVING existing files and WRITING new ones?

What is the correct procedure for submitting a feature request? Does one simply post a question (or start a discussion?) in the feature voting forum?
