Remote Streaming - ROKU

I’ve had a handful of family members report buffering issues when trying to access media on Plex. I as Plex Server Admin have the lifetime Plex Pass and with that I understand there was no changes to remote streaming. The family members that are reporting buffering issues all are accessing Plex via a ROKU streaming stick. Is it something on their end that they need to adjust within the Plex app via ROKU? Or something I need to do on server admin side? Buffering when accessing Plex content remotely was never an issue in the past, it seems like the issue started within the last few weeks.

It’s most likely the new Roku app. It’s a complete rewrite and currently has a ton of bugs and missing features. There are so many factors though. I would recommend checking your upload speed, make sure you’re still getting the same as before. If that checks out then have them all find a transcode speed that works without buffering. Assuming you have a server that can do good transcoding.

I have done this in the past with good success. I have external people start at max (direct play/stream) then start working down the list of speeds until they find one that works consistently. You can also recommend they go one or two down from that to account for anyone else using the internet at the same time to watch YouTube or game or whatever other bandwidth intensive things are happening.
