Remove ad detection dependency on DVR

For ad detection to be configured for existing files two things must be true:

  1. A DVR must be configured
  2. Said DVR must have commercial skipping/removing enabled

See this post for more details.

This has a couple unfortunate consequences

  1. Can’t detect ads for servers that don’t have a DVR (obviously); is there a technical reason for this?
  2. All recordings inherit the commercial skipping/removing from the DVR

#2 in particular is annoying for me. I also use my server for gaming, and the resource usage from the commercial skip/remove process is significant enough that I prefer it be done as a scheduled task during downtime. Unfortunately that means I have to disable commercial handling for everything I configure to record. Not the end of the world but kind of a PITA.

So, in a nutshell why not decouple these ad detection feature from DVR config? Seems like there’d be a few benefits doing so.

One would be to run Commercial Detection on non-Plex DVR content added to your Plex server. Supposedly you can get this done but you still have to configure Plex DVR. Never got it to work and gave up. Put the tuner back to my DVR.

Good to know for #1, I’d still run into #2 problem though, i.e., having to disable commercial handling for everything I record.
