I’m curious about what happens if I rename files that have already been added to plex.
Say, for example, I have this show already added to Plex:
\Shows
\Show Name (2022)
Show Name (2022) - s01e01.mkv
And I rename the the file to:
\Shows
\Show Name (2022)
show.name.(2022).s01e01.pilot.mkv
Is Plex smart enough to know this is the same file it already scraped and scanned for intro (based on crc32 or something), or does it remove the old file and treat this is new then proceeds to re-scraping and re-scan for intros?
I have several series I’d like to rename but I don’t want it all to be removed, re-scrapped and re-scanned and considered new.
If Plex is able to identify and match the new file name to the same episode as it did previously, certain things will be maintained (watch history, for example). However, media analysis functions such as intro/credit detection, commercial detection, deep analysis to determine track bitrates, et al.) will have to be performed again.
I don’t know that I’d recommend putting your system through that for such a trivial naming change, particularly when you’re current naming is pretty much textbook according to Plex’s requirements (per their examples). It looks like you’re trying to eliminate all spaces for some reason.
Yes, I don’t plan to do it now. I was only going to if it didn’t force everything to be seen as new. My main goal was adding episode titles in the file names, and was going to eliminate spaces and make everything lowercase as well while adding episode names. But I will avoid it for now on shows already added. Thanks.
