Request: Larger subtitles

Subtitles tend to render quite small on mobile devices. Especially when the subtitle tracks specify a small font size.

Also, subtitles often present with strange, low contrast foreground, background, and outline colors.

Can we please get playback controls to override subtitle font settings?

For example, a menu with relative subtitle font size options including 10%, 20%, 30%, 40%, 50%, 60%, 70%, 80%, 90%, 100% (default), 200%, 300%, 400%, 500%, 600%, 700%, 800%, would be appreciated. Such a control would support a wide range of Plex clients and screen dimensions.

For example, a menu with a dozen or so stock subtitle font styles, would be appreciated:

  • Foreground: Yellow, Background: Transparent, Outline: Black (Default)
  • Foreground: White, Background: Black, Outline: None (Closed Captions)
  • Foreground: Null, Background: Null, Outline: Null (Passthrough)

On iPad and iPhone, Apple provides some OS level options in Settings → Accessibility → Subtitles & Captioning. However, this only works for a second. Then the styling resets back to how it was before :confused:

Some users suggest changing OS settings thusly to adjust subtitles. However, Plex has the ability to transcode, and therefore has the potential alter the font styling of subtitles in flight. Many OS subtitle settings inherit from track settings, so Plex could help the user to obtain consistent subtitle styling in a device independent way.

Suggest moving this to feature requests so we can vote on it. I support this!

The subtitles system could use an overhaul. On iPad, subtitles still exhibit the glitch where they show up for a second upon resuming playback, only to disappear for the rest of the video.

Not seeing iPad options to burn in subtitles during transcoding.
