Auto Update PMS

Is there anyway of having the manually installed PMS package auto-update or update via the web UI?

Presently I have to download the new package and manually update, is this correct?

Everything else on my sonology is auto-updated.

Synology’s Package Center will automatically update PMS when they update it in their Package Center store if you have it enabled. The biggest issue here is Synology politics. They usually only update it when then make major DSM changes.

Regarding updating from within Plex itself, unfortunately not possible.

To install packages on Linux requires root/administrator privilege. PMS runs as a normal, unprivileged user.

I’m not sure what you mean by have it enabled? I installed the package direct from the website to make use of hardware encoding because I read they only have the 32-bit version in the store.

Correct. That’s where Synology politics gets involved.

  1. They mandate 64 bit applications run on their system (Recent DSM update)
  2. Unable or refuse to provide the 64 bit version Plex for X86_64 architecture systems (their naming convention which I follow in the package creator)

That leaves us with two options:

  1. I completely undo the recent changes I did to lower Plex’s privilege level on the box (protecting media and privacy)
    a. Write an auto-updater which does the updating on a schedule
    b. The Web team makes the linkages to hook to the Synology installer.

  2. Continue installing manually as we do now,

The first task is significant. I also just lowered the privilege level, which was done at community request. Auto-install and lower privilege level are mutually exclusive.

Unfortunately this is a no-win scenario for someone.

So basically I have to just keep manually updating (thanks to Synology)?

Until such time as the situation improves, Yes.
We keep sending them the updates but they never make it to Package Center.

In contrast, QNAP stays in sync with us even with their media player.
There is no logic in why Synology appears to favor Video Station (which even mirrored our previous UI layout) won’t work with us.
