I just played my first movie on the Wii U through Plex/Web, and was really impressed with the results. Is there any chance a Plex app could be released on the Nintendo eShop? As great as Plex/Web is, I don’t want my kids (or wife and mother-in-law) to be able to go under the hood like that. From what I’ve seen of the system so far this would make an amazing client!
Looks like there’s little interest at this point. Also, I just found out that the system doesn’t support any 5.1 formats other than LPCM, which really cripples its use in a home theater environment. Bummer.
Id like to revive this request. A dedicated app would really just make this so much easier than the web client on the Wii U.

Pretty sure this feature request needs to go to Nintendo... Plex devs can't just make an app and expect Nintendo to put it on there.
If someone wants this, then they'll have to organize a kickstarter or somethininstall baseg that will provide developers with incentive. The Wii U has a fairly small user base, even with the increased hardware sales post-Mario Kart. So either the Wii U will need to drastically increase its user base or rely on crowd funding. There's always the possibility a fan will take on the challenge out of pure interest much like XBMC.
Perhaps an HTML5 based app?
According to this site https://wiiu-developers.nintendo.com, it's possible to do this with html5, js and css. And also includes a self-publish system. Netflex also have an app for Wii U.

An HTML5 app will have the same problems as using Plex through the browser, though it may be a bit prettier. Why Nintendo would to to the trouble of supporting the HTML5 Video tag, but not the Audio tag is beyond me. The Netfront browser page says they support it, so either Nintendo needs to update their browser, of they've deliberately disabled it.

I would definitely be interested in a Wii U app, it is a pretty good Netflix streamer, Plax functionality would make it a reasonable media device for me.
