REQUEST - WiiU Plex Client app

I read in another thread that there was a vote requesting a WiiU App be created, but I couldn't find one anywhere, so here it is!

While the WiiU currently works with the web app, it's not without its faults.

In my experience, it's very laggy to navigate, and there are issues with aspect ratios.

A clean, responsive app would go a long way on this system! After using the web app, you can really see the potential of the WiiU as a plex client.

As of writing, global WiiU sales sit at 7.29 million(since Nov 2012) and this figure will be likely to increase with the new Smash Brothers game being released soon.

For comparison, Roku has sold over 10 million units(with 19 odd different models) since May 2008, so while it's not as focused a platform as Roku, it's got the numbers to compete, and it's the same hardware & software for all the units.

I understand(could be off the mark here) that after purchasing the hardware, WiiU development is free. Obviously that doesn't factor in paying your staff to develop the application, but it's only a good thing, right? I know you've got limited resources and everyone wants plex to work on their 5 year old TV box or tablet, but I feel that this is a big enough platform to garner your attention.

I'm curious to know how many sales you'd be wanting to justify development...a kickstarter type campaign could perhaps work if you could give us an indication?

Anyway, I've put a poll up, so please vote! I'm not sure how many WiiU owners there are on here, but I'll try to spread the word about this thread to get a better idea.

Thanks for you time. :)

There's not a lot of votes on this, but I had a hard time finding this thread as well, so maybe that's it? Now that the PS4 and Xbone both have an app hopefully the Wii U can get one.

I voted no.. but here's why. I use Plex everyday for my television and movie watching. The thing is... I do this through Wii U's browser. I don't know if there have been updates since you wrote this but the browser, for me, works flawless. I get the television shows and movies in HD, no lag, no instability, everything works perfect. No issues with aspect ratios, no issues with responsiveness. Maybe wireless connection is leading to instability? I have a son, so another reason I like watching movies and television is if there's  questionable scene or something I don't want him seeing / hearing.. I hit the X and curtains are drawn. Now obviously this is something that can be incorporated into an app but still... I wouldn't pay money for something that works perfect for me already. I hope you see improvement with your experience with the Wii U. Are you connected through HDMI cable? I'm not sure what would cause aspect ratio issues.. unless your TV is trying to force something while Plex or the Wii U is trying to force another. Maybe explore display options more in depth?

Getting the video to stream to the wiiu gamepad controller would be killer.

Getting the video to stream to the wiiu gamepad controller would be killer.

This is possible felickz, I often watch TV shows on the gamepad, that way I can walk around the house with it, free up a TV plus the sound comes through the pad which is totally awesome. I utilize this when my son sleeps in my room with me so I don't wake him, I watch it on TV but have only the game pad sound on next to my ears. Like a drive-in speaker or somethin :D

I think it would be the right choice to do - after all, we already have it on the other two current gen consoles: xbone and ps4. The Wii U of course also has it's killer gamepad second screen - something that would be awesome. Even if the app cost an extra $5, I have a feeling those who use plex and own a Wii U would consider it worth it to invest in the small cost.

Another BIG reason for a dedicated Wii U Plex app over Plex Web in Wii U browser: MP3s!

The Wii U's Browser does not support HTML5's Audio Element as a result mp3s do not play (this isn't limited to Plex Web, Google's Play Music doesn't play mp3s on the Wii either!).
Oddly enough videos with mp3 codec used for the sound track play just fine!?!?! I'm currently looking into the posibility of editing the XML of Plex client profile to hopefully get Plex to transcode mp3s to .mp4s which should work on the Wii U... I'm new to both the Wii U and Plex (though I've messed around with XBMC in the past), so I don't know if I can handle this kind of tweaking yet.

Another thing, The Plex Web player-controller shows on the Wii U tablet controller all the time, would be nice if it faded away. The Video Mirrors on both the TV and the Tablet which creates and echo unless you turn the sound down. This also (unnecessarily if you are watching on TV) drains the battery on the tablet.

And finally controlling the web interface is a bit clunky on the tablet, I often miss a button unless I use the stylus to 'click'. It would be nice to be able to use the stick and buttons to navigate the UI.

Do a Plex app for the Wii U please !

I voted yes. Native app is far better than Web. Secondly, you can use Wii U Touch Pad as a remote control.

There is no proper way to play even a MP3 on Wii U.

Wii U Development tools for Wii U is free, because Nintendo pays for it all.

There is several different dev kits too choose from too, and all of them is Wii U ready.

If 1 man developers can sit at home and make things for official Nintendo Wii U eShop, then anyone can.

The tools is free, and you earn money from first copy sold on eShop.

BTW: Wii U sales now is 9.2 millions and will increase quite faster soon when several flag ship titles is released. Zelda, Starfox, The Devils Third, Xenoblade Chronicles X etc.

Bump...

pleeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaaaassssssseeeeeeeeee

the trouble i had to go to to make it on the wii u browser..

Just bought a WiiU. I’ve bought the iOS app, the Android app, the Roku app, and I’d definitely buy another app for the WiiU. I’d be happy with single screen functionality using the older wii-mote to point and click around like the roku app does.

Plex for WiiU would be incredible. Would love to stream to the Gamepad.

…just keeping the dream up

Meh, I got a Roku stick and just the roku app.

I still think this is a good idea, and I’d be happy to pay for the app!

I guess if it’s not been done by now, it’s not likely to happen…however, Netflix have an app, so it’s not like it’s an abandoned platform!

2016 and still not a native app for the Wii U. I find it rather incredible, since the other current-gen consoles support Plex natively.
