'Resolution or bitrate exceeds maximum allowed'

I am running Plex server from a Nvidia Shield, playing files from a directly attached USB drive. Anything I play looks like a low quality YouTube video, with artifacts and picture breakup constantly. The files are all 1080P HEVC/x264. When I check the information panel whilst playing a file, it says ‘Resolution or bitrate exceeds maximum allowed’ , with hardware transcoding. The file I am looking at now is showing a resolution of 718 x 388.
Under Settings > Video Quality > Home Streaming, I have it set to Maximum. For internet access my Shield is tethered to my mobile phone, but as these files are all local I am stumped as to why this is happening. Any suggestions?

Here is my log:

This is a known limitation. The app is not expecting users to have a tethered cellular connection so the quality setting for this is not exposed as it is in the mobile version. The cellular connection has a default of 2 Mbps, and since the setting is not exposed, you can’t change it.

So running files locally from a USB the mobile settings take effect? this seems like a huge oversight issue

Thanks for the reply at least I have the answer although its disappointing. I appreciate its an unusual configuration. I assumed as I was running media locally that there would be no issues. I have alternate ways of playing the files on my Shield so will use those for the time being.

Oh wait. I missed that these files are attached to the Shield itself. Well, the remote quality setting shouldn’t matter in this case.

Can you recreate and provide me the full log from PMS and from the client?

I’ve had similar issues when playing files from PMS on my Shield, playing back on the Shield itself.

I don’t have the logs to hand … but at the time, it looked like the player was connecting to PMS on the WAN IP address! Never mind not using localhost (which it should have done), or the internal private LAN IP address.

Could be the same problem here.

Found the post where I’d put the logs: BUG: Latest Android TV client “Resolution or bitrate exceeds maximum allowed”
