[RESOLVED] Audio Streaming Broken - Android (V7.17) Latest Update

UPDATE:
Resolved as of 2019-07-15. Unfortunately I am not 100% of the possible resolution, as I took a few steps before testing.

Actions taken:

  • Updated server to latest release [Version 1.16.2.1297].
  • Moved music from WD-NAS Mechanical Drive to 1TB SSD on same server.
  • Removed libraries, transferred contents to brand new 6TB WD RED drive.

It’s possible that the update fixed the issue. Alternatively, removing the libraries and re-adding them could have also been a solution. The third possibility was that moving the files to a new drive resolved the problem. Hopefully any of these are possible solutions to those with the same issue.

Reason for report:
Since the most recent update, music streaming has been broken on the Plex Android application.

Description:
When attempting to stream audio, the song will shortly buffer before attempting to play. The song will indicate that it plays 4 seconds of the track (no sound played), before restarting back at 0:00, and repeating indefinitely in this same 4 second cycle.

Things to note:

  • Video streaming works completely fine on the device. Streaming music to a chromecast or TV from the application still works fine.

  • Streaming music from a desktop browser works fine. The issue is solely when attempting to stream audio to the android application on the device. (Streaming audio from a web browser on the device also works, so it’s purely isolated to the application)

  • This issue began happening after the most recent update.

  • The exact same issue is also affecting my wifes phone after she updated the application. We both have Google Pixel 3XL’s.

  • Uninstalling and reinstalling the application has had no effect.

Update:

I broke out my old Samsung S6 Edge and downloaded the most recent Plex application to it. The exact same symptoms occur - the song will attempt to play for exactly 4 seconds (0:00, 0:01, 0:02, 0:03, 0:04) and then restart, attempting to replay from 0:00.

Android Application Version:

7.17.4.1141

Server Version:

Version 1.16.1.1291

Video of Issue

bump to original post

Posting until an update is made.

Same thing happens to me. Hitting the pause/play button a couple of times re-starts the stream properly, However, the app seems to re-connect remotely even when I’m connected with wi-fi (or needs to establish a new connection) for the stream to play properly. The Dashboard “Now playing” confirms this, as does Tautili.

Can’t post logs right now, but I will when it happens again. I wonder if it’s somehow related to the “off line” bug the android app has for the home page?

Just happened again. Attaching server logs, but I’m sure the Android logs will be required.

The same thing, it appears the app loses it’s connection, and establishes a new one. Going to the “Home” page after the glitch shows the “Offline” or “no connection” screen. Reconnecting returns the app to wi-fi (as it should be) if it can actually re-connect.

I will be taking a video of the problem and posting it shortly.

Video of the issue can be seen at:

Has it been fixed?

No. I will be keeping this thread up until I receive an official response, or it becomes resolved.

So, I might be having a similar issue?

When I play music from my phone locally, everything seems to be fine (well, casting kind of broke the other day, but that seemed to be a one-off).

However, if I play music remotely, like when I’m driving, I’ll usually get a couple of songs to play, but then it just stops either mid song or at the beginning of a new song. If I look at my phone, it shows that the song is still playing, but not progressing. If I close playback and play the song again, then it will play for usually 1 or 2 more songs and then do the same thing. I first noticed this a couple of weeks ago, and it hasn’t been working right since. I never had a problem before.
