Restrict to specific IP address

Hi Everyone,

I am fairly new to Plex Media Server, but fairly technical. I would like to please know if there is a way to restrict sharing to a specific IP address?

I have created an account for my friend to view content off a specific library I set up. However, when I go to “Remote Access” and go “Enable Remote Access” so they can see the library, I worry this is wide open to every IP.

What is the best way of restricting this to just their IP address? Is there such a setting in Plex? Can I do this in Windows Defender for Windows 10 ? (I tried, but it isn’t restricting anything).

Thanks !

No, it’s not. There is no access if the client is not authenticated. That’s why a plex.tv user account is mandatory.

Thanks OttoKerner. Is there no way to further restrict it by the IP address that the person is coming in from, or is the connection originated from the Plex central server ?

No, the connections are directly from the respective client devices to the server.
Authentication is done through plex.tv though, so you need to allow that as well, if you are applying filters in your firewall. But doing so is difficult, because there are no static IP’s for the plex.tv cloud.

Is the connection from the respective client on a different port than the authentication from the plex.tv cloud ?

Sorry, I don’t know about that. You’ll have to wireshark that on your own.

Does anyone else know the answer off the top of their heads ?
