After discovering the security changes in the last version of PMS and making some necessary changes to the folder permissions to get Plex working again, I have read carefully through the “Read This First” post and realised that the way I organised my media files on the NAS when I first installed Plex (some years ago now) was far from optimal.
I’ve got “music”, “photo”, “video” and “Plex” folders in /volume1, and “Documentaries”, “Home Videos”, “Movies” and “TV” in /volume1/video.
The permissions are a bit inconsistent: the various media folders in /volume1 are all owned by root, as is /volume1/Plex, while the four folders in /volume1/video are owned by different users: root, admin, and trevor (i.e. me).
There are approx 2000 video files in total, not much in music or photos. At this stage I wonder whether it is better to just persist with what I have (which is workable), or if I would be better advised to restructure all the media files as per the best practices recommended in the FAQ. And if I go the restructure route, what is the safest/simplest/optimal way to do this? Ideally without losing any played/unplayed info in the library!
I looked at Filebot but unless I’m missing something it seems to assume a specific structure with standard folder names within your Media folder; and mine is a bit different (videos are split across movies, tv, music videos, documentaries, home videos, other). Am I missing something?
After moving all the media files to subfolders of Media in volume1 and renewing the library data in Plex, I left things for a few days then returned to clean up the debris left behind. I had already deleted the old folder locations from the Plex libraries, but I still had folders on the NAS - now empty or system files only - and tried deleting those. This is where it got a bit weird.
Using File Station I was able to delete the /volume1/video/* folders, and successfully deleted the /volume1/music folder, but I was not able to delete either the /volume1/video or /volume1/photo folder at all. Although music offered a delete option in the menu, video and photo did not.
File explorer on Windows looking at \\diskstation showed the video, music and photo folders but would not let me delete any of them.
I managed to remove /volume1/video by ssh’ing into the diskstation as the admin user, and executing ‘sudo rm -r /volume1/video’. So now the video folder is not visible in File Station but it still appears in File Explorer on windows, but times out if I try to do anything with it.
File Station shows: Media and photo
Windows Explorer shows: Media, music, photo and video
Media is working fine and is the only location referenced in any of the Plex libraries
Any ideas what’s going on? Why can’t I delete photo on the NAS? Why am I still seeing music and video on Windows?
Thanks, makes sense. I did install Photo Station originally when I got the NAS but I removed it shortly after. I don’t think I’ve ever installed Video Station or Audio Station - unless the default setup created them for me anyway.
