Resume Doesn't Work

Server Version#:1.29.1.6316-7000 Synology)
Player Version#: Latest
I have a Sony BRAVIA 4K UR3 “Smart TV”. It “plays” movies just fine from my Synology DS916+ NAS running DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 1. However, “Resume” does not work. It appears to try to resume as I can see CPU & disk activity on the NAS. Then it stops after 5-10 minutes. I uninstalled the Plex App and reinstalled from the Google Play Store. I tried again with the same results.
The resume works just fine with the web player from the Synology NAS app.
All access is from a local network - NOT Internet.

I don’t have a BRAVIA TV but I didn’t know you install the Plex app on it using the Google Play Store.

There’s a web player for the Synology NAS?!? How does that work IIRC the Synology doesn’t drive a display (rather there’s a web interface).

Are you running a Plex Media Server on your Synology?

How does resume work when playing from the Plex app installed on say a phone?

Apparently, you can only install the Plex CLIENT from the Google Play Store. The Plex SERVER is running on my Synology NAS. It includes a client as well. The client runs in a tab on my browser.

The Plex Client on my iPhone plays fine, but the resume only resumes the audio. I guess I have found another client problem. I don’t use the iPhone client much.

I have installed both plex-desktop and plex-htpc, both Plex client players, on my Ubuntu 22.04 Linux box using both snap and flatpak. The Plex client may only be available from the Google Play Store on Android cell phones (maybe Chromebooks - I have no experience with those).

If you’re running a Plex client in a tab in your browser then the question reverts to, “OK, where’s that browser running?”. Cause Synology doesn’t have a “head” or a screen/display. You interact with the Synology through a browser tab to talk to DSM and/or Plex (and/or many other apps that you can run on the Synology - I run a few Docker containers with web apps that run on the Synology but are accessed through a web browser running on my Linux boxes or Windows boxes or even browser running on a cell phone). What I’m saying here is that you are not running a Plex app on Synology, you’re running it on another machine that the browser is also running on.

Sorry, but getting the terminology correct is important to understand the problem. So let’s look at the problem statement again

So then, you have PMS running on the Synology and you have installed the Plex Client for BRAVIA? (Do you install the Plex client on BRAVIA using the Google Play Store? I don’t know. I don’t have a BRAVIA).

So are you really saying that when you run Plex in a web browser tab on your it fails to resume? And when you run it on the iPhone Plex app it resumes only the audio? What happens if you run the Plex web app on your iPhone by using a browser there? What happens if you use the BRAVIA? What happens if you use another computer say a Mac or Windows box (or shudder - a Linux box!).

My PMS running on my Synology works fine with my Vizio TV, several friends’ BRAVIA TVs, Rokus, Chrome, Brave and other browsers, plex-desktop, plex-htpc, and Plex app on Android.

Were you running PMS on Synology prior to DSM 7.1? Maybe your DMS 7.1 installation is messed up?

Have you checked logfiles?

You left me in the dust with most of your thread.
If I log into my PMS on Synology, it has a number of apps I can select, File Station, Control Panel, Storage, Manager, etc. One other app is Plex Media Server. This opens a new browser tab with a URL of, http://192.168.1.114:32400/web/index.html#!/. The IP address is the address of my PMS.

As with an iPhone or a Smart TV, to install an app, you need to go to the Apple Store or the Google Play Store. I have been running Plex for at least ten years.

Don’t worry about any of that.

If you’re having the issue on the TV AND the phone it’s mostly likely a problem or bug with your server. Without logs you’re just guessing at things

Restart Plex on the Synology, wait 1 minute

Try to reproduce the resume failure on the Bravia TV

After it happens wait a minute or two

On the server controls inside Plex go to
Settings

You may have to roll back to an earlier version if you noticed this starting after the last update

Instead of going to the pre-play page, what happens if you just push play while hovering over the movie poster in the continue watching row of a partially watched video?

Same failure or does it resume where you left off properly?

Dust it may be however you do not seem to understand the environment which you run under… And for ten years! You are running the Plex web, not on Synology.

And with that, I politely bow out…

To be clear, you are using the Plex an Android TV client, not Plex for Smart TV. There is a big difference between these 2.

Check the settings in the app. Do you have the option enabled to “automatically adjust quality”. If so, turn that off and try playing the file again.

I have checked. That option is off.

I upgraded to the latest PMS, PlexMediaServer-1.29.2.6364-6d72b0cf6-x86_64_DSM7. Now when I try to resume a movie on teh Smart TV, it just keeps trying to locate the position. I let it run for about 11 minutes then backed out.

Are you testing with this same video? Have you tried another video?

PMS is complaining that this video is encoded badly and has the wrong time info in it so it’s unable to jump to the location requested.

Nov 09, 2022 14:54:04.194 [0x7fbfa8acfb38] ERROR - [Req#11ba/Transcode/zv4d97qxbaftyr4tea3hh9gr/40a816f8-c39a-431a-bc17-8bf894e15855] [mp4 @ 0x7fae4d28f6c0] Application provided duration: -1 / timestamp: 17211709 is out of range for mov/mp4 format

The time of 17211709 is in milliseconds. That’s almost 5 hours, which is wrong, since the video is only only 5019562 (83 minutes) long.

Hey! Thanks for the decode! Really!

I “re-ripped” the video and will test it. on my Roku setup (original problem).

I got sidetracked with other issues on my Smart TV unable to resume ANY video. It just keeps on searching. I try the same video on my iPhone and the audio starts at the correct resumed place, but I don’t get any video. I hardly ever use the iPhone to watch movies.
