I have Plex running on a Windows 10 PC (8 GB RAM, RAID 1, 4TB, GBE). I love the product but I have TWO issues:
-
Movies with subtitles (e.g. The Longest Day, French Kiss) don’t display them. I copied them WITHOUT subtitles, the first time, and, well, no subtitles (duh). But when I recorded WITH subtitles, the subtitles show ALL THE TIME. I just want them to show up when they normally would (e.g. In TLD, the germans speak and you see the English translation, same in French Kiss) but either I NEVER see them or I see them for EVERYTHING (English and whatever other language is in the movie). I just want to see the subtitles I would normally see if I played the DVD or BRD in the player. Is that possible? I’m using EaseFAB Video Converter Ultimate to convert these to MP4 format.

Often times the movie will just stop playing and take me back to the title screen. I then have to restart (from the beginning) and fast forward to where it stopped playing. This does not happen EVERY time but it happens better than 70% of the time. There is nothing else running on this “server” PC. It has a GBE card and minimal home LAN traffic. Everything is hard wired (no wireless video) on GBE switches. Is there anything I can do to improve buffering or anything like that so this doesn’t just stop playing? That’s annoying.
I don’t really know much about subtitles, in Plex.
But, you can download subtitles, from subscene, if you are lucky, you could find subs for foreign parts only. Or, as I have done, edit & create your own.
You can the add the subs, to a movie, if you use Mkvtoolnix.

You are referring to forced subtitles. Some movies have them as a separate subtitle track. Others have them as part of the video (so you don’t have to do anything). It varies by movie.
I’m not familiar with EaseFAB Video Converter. You’ll need to see if it supports burning in subtitles, then choose the correct subtitle track when converting the movie. “Burning in” makes the subtitles part of the video. They always display when you play the video and cannot be turned off. You generally do not want to do this with regular dialog, but it is OK with forced/foreign translation subtitles.
Need additional information to help with this.
Plex Media Server version? Available at https://app.plex.tv/desktop#!/settings/devices/all
Plex Media Client platform & version? Amazon stick, Smart TV, etc.? Version available same location as for server.
Please pull the Plex XML information for one of the movies that fails to complete, zip the file, and attach it to your reply. See Investigate Media Information and Formats for instructions.
Are your movies transcoding during playback? Play the same movie for which you pulled the XML file. While the movie is playing, go to Plex Web on a PC, and look at Status - Now Playing. What does it show? If transcoding, to what formats?
Ok…The Forced Subtitles is what I was looking for! Thank you!! That fixed the problem.
There IS an option for Forced Subtitles (after you select a language). That is the fix for the problem. Thank you!
