ReadyNAS 214 - Cannot shutdown service - Continued

Continuation of the closed topic with no solution.

I also noticed that I could not stop the server on my ReadyNAS 214 after 1.16 but didn’t see any issues so I kept upgrading the Plex Media Server when updates were available. Got all the way to 1.18 Dec 20/19 release before I ran into an issue.

Issue was my NAS plex server could not be found anymore and I could not restart it or remove it. Tried rebooting the NAS box, no luck. Eventually I found an old copy of Plex Media server 1.14 and was able to install over the higher version 1.18. Took 10 minutes to complete but it did eventually replace the newer version.

Now I am able to start and stop the server. I finally got access to the NAS plex library again as well.

I wish plex support would fix this issue as I am refusing to upgrade any further until this problem is fixed.

Well don’t hold your breath waiting for this to happen. Notice the thread closed after 90 days and not ONE post in it from anyone representing Plex? That should tell you something. I had to buy a used Dell XT3 with an i5 to run Plex on. Figured if I had to do that to run Plex I may as well go back to using Emby. Neither Plex or Readynas could give a hoot about fixing the issue. No more Netgear products for me.

I installed 1.18.5.2309 on ReadyNAS 214 today and no luck, still cannot shutdown the service via the ReadyNAS web interface.

Hoping one day it will get fixed.

Installed 1.18.6.2368 on ReadyNAS 214, hoping new release is able to allow users to shutdown Plex service from within ReadyNAS admin tools.

Selected the shutdown service option

  • App shutting down service screen is in progress
  • Will give it a few minutes and report back the verdict.

After 30 minutes, the result is the same. The spinning waiting icon is still spinning and the service is still running. Looks like bug is still present, cannot shutdown the Plex service from within ReadyNAS admin.

This has been a known issue for well over a year and there hasn’t been so much as a peep from the development team. It is safe to say that Plex on the RN 212/214 is not longer supported.

Just installed 1.18.7.2457 on RN2XX, lets see if this version can shutdown the app… After a few minutes of watching the icon spinning in an attempt to shutdown the service I decided to give up again and wait for the next release.

Hoping that over time one of the Netgear developers will fix the bug on this platform.

Safe to say this isn’t at the top of the list, but also why do you need to shut down the plex server anyway?
However if you visit any other Server page, there’s problems with all of them.
Regards.

Good question, why are people asking the developers to allow users to shutdown a service that is running on the NAS box.

Well let me start with my reasons and I am sure others can add their reasons:

  1. Being able to stop a service running on your NAS box is important when you are troubleshooting an issue.

For example, you play around with the settings of the plex server and you start to see the application act up and you don’t know what is causing it however you want to restart the application to see if that clears the issue.

With the current setup you cannot.

I would need to restart the entire NAS box. Personally I don’t like doing that. No different than on your PC do you reboot your entire computer if you had an issue with an application? Or do you simply close the application and restart the app without having to reboot the whole system?

  1. You should not show a feature that cannot be used.

If the developers did not want the shutdown feature to work with their application they should have removed it. Don’t show a button where the user can click to shutdown and start up the service within the NAS administrative menu that does not work.

This would be no different than you buying a car and having the ability to turn the driving lights on but never being able to turn them off until you turn off the car. Why put the option that says you can turn off the lights if you really can’t.

  1. It’s a bug and the developers should really fix it.

Think about it, this feature worked way back in ver 1.14.x and along the way it stopped working.

Not sure why… actually I can tell you why, bad quality control on Netgears part to roll out software that cannot pass the basic test of turning on and off the software. How does this continue to pass their QC with each release when a very basic function continues to fail. Users have reported it and yet it continues to not be addressed in any of their releases since 1.14.x

Here is a thread of someone who would appreciate the shutdown feature if it worked

The upgrade to Version 1.19.4.2935 worked.

I upgraded Plex Server to 1.19.4.2935 and I still cannot shutdown the service from within ReadyNAS. It starts the process and says to wait, unfortunately it does nothing. I let it run overnight to find the next morning that the Plex Server is still running.

Uploaded firmware 1.20.1.3252 onto the ReadyNAS 214 to see if the issue is fixed. Still get a waiting message that the process will take a while, please wait. Unfortunately the wait is indefinite.

Maybe the problem is not Plex but rather ReadyNAS?

But it used to work so many version ago (1.14.x) but not now. So I don’t know who to blame, maybe both vendors.
