So this has been a problem lately, couldn’t tell you exactly when it started. I made another post about it and thought new stuff HEVC was my issue but I’m playing OLD stuff now that I know has played fine before and it’s doing the same thing. Server and client are both fully up-to-date (including OS updates). Stream starts off fine, then after a couple of minutes the bandwidth shoots up and I get constant buffering. This only happens with HEVC files, not H.264. It also seems like this problem doesn’t occur when remote playing, only local. As far as I can tell the Roku is compatible with HEVC and it’s direct playing the video and not transcoding. There doesn’t seem to be any set time that it happens in but it’s usually within 5 minutes of starting a video give or take.
I’m super-new to troubleshooting Plex to be honest, I’ve had it over and year and it just works, lol. It seems to be anything HEVC but that specific file in the screenshot:
- Bitrate 7732 kbps
- Video Resolution 1080p
- Container MKV
- Video Frame Rate 24p
- Audio Profile lc
- Video Profile main 10
- Codec HEVC
Here is a screenshot while it’s buffering: https://imgur.com/MevzAbN.jpg
What’s even weirder, usually it just give a failed to playback message after sitting there for a minute or so.
CPU is an 8-core AMD Opteron 6344. I’ve allocated the VM 4GB of RAM since it doesn’t do any actual transcoding (really). The storage array is a QNAP NAS with a RAID 5.
I just don’t get why only HEVC does this. I can take that exact file, re-encode as H.264, and it will play back flawlessly.
One other quick note, I know the network graph in Plex isn’t always the greatest, but the OS confirms that it is sending ~50Mbps of data down the wire: https://i.imgur.com/WjWcwO6.jpg
Any thoughts? How can I help track this down? TIA!!
