Roku: Bring back an easy signin method

I’ve heard that the simple 4 character code login method had to be removed to meet Roku requirements (link below). That seems crazy… tons of other apps don’t require me to enter my username and password on Roku.

Please bring back an easy way to login.

Thanks!

Plex for Roku - #364 by ljunkie from

In the client? The 4 digit pin is working just fine for me in the new Roku interface. In fact, it’s one of the only things that does work.

The terminology is confusing. On a brand new TV (or if you change your password and log out all devices), you need to sign back into Plex with your password on the Roku. It’s different than the 4 digit PIN that you use once you’ve signed in (that you get everytime you launch the Roku app).

This thread is about the link code, not about the PIN.

PIN: 4 characters, all numbers, for protecting against switching between different users within a Plex Home
Link code: 4 characters (letters and numbers for easily linking “big-screen” plex clients to a particular plex account)

The change was made upon Roku’s request. It is one of the requirements they made mandatory recently-ish, to get a 3rd-party app listed in their app store.
The comment you linked to in the initial post was made by a Plex developer, btw. So that is directly from the horse’s mouth.

I reauthed the Roku here via the sign-in code recently. Was that a fluke that it let me do that?

Absolutely insane requirement by Roku. I haven’t had to enter my full username and password on a TV app in a long time. After the Plex breach and having to log out of everything, I really would have known to dread what I was about to do if I knew I would have to enter a stupidly long password on a remote.

Many streaming devices have a “remote app” for mobile that you can use to control the device without using the normal device remote, and one of the features of such apps is being able to type using your normal phone keyboard.

While having to install an app for such a task is kinda silly, it would be a way to speed up long-form typing on your device.

I was able to copy / paste my Plex account password from my password manager into the Roku mobile app on my phone. Much easier than using the Roku remote control or even typing on the mobile phone keyboard.

This requirement is insane. I let me family access my Plex media library, but I’m not giving them my login information. As someone else above mentioned, after the breach I automatically logged off all devices. Now my family is asking why they can’t get access to the Plex library again. How are we supposed to deal with this little wrinkle?

As Plex designed it, If they are family living elsewhere they are supposed to have their own Plex accounts that you then grant access to your server with.

Good to know! Thank you for the heads up on this. I’ll ask them to create accounts and send me the info. Slightly more involved, but it is what it is.

Keep in mind since these are separate accounts they will have all new settings. If they don’t want the Plex ad-supported content they will need to go disable those services on their account in the Online Media Sources section. Also the Account Visibility and Activity Sharing prefs will come up at some point when they set up their devices. This is where they will want to disable the options that result in those emails about what’s popular in their household.

I’m wondering if that was the code to link your Plex account to your Roku account. You should not have seen the code to use at plex.tx/link.

The New Roku didn’t use a code for Roku Account onboarding. You entered the account’s email address and Roku sends an email with a link you click on to confirm the device authentication.

I was ready to sit there and type in the Plex Account info into the app with the remote (this isn’t my Roku so I’m not installing the remote app for it), but then it gave me the Plex Link Code on screen and I had to go get my phone in the other room so I could type it into the site.

Hmm. I wonder if this depends on the device. I tried this 2 weeks ago and got the Roku account link on screen. No plex link.
