rPi2 with latest RasPlex lately showing the "not enough power" rainbow thing

Hi there,

I’ve been using the absolute same setup for months, and I’ve never had any troubles. I specifically bought my power supply in a bundle from thepihut.com to avoid any problems. It also has been at least a few weeks since I last upgraded RasPlex to the latest version, and I’ve not encountered this in the first weeks. Only during the past 3 to 5 days or so I’ve noticed that the rainbow icon in the upper right corner appears increasingly often. Mostly in the menus, but lately also during normal playback. Even though the icon is showing, I never have any issues like stuttering or slower than usual menus, so I’m quite confused. Restarting the Pi doesn’t fix it. Does anyone know what might be the reason for this?

Could be that the power supply is faulty, check to output voltage and ampage.

Have you any high power USB peripherals connected?

Definitely nothing in Rasplex that could be causing it

Regards

Thanks for the reply , Ned! Just a FLIRC IR receiver that was there since the very first time I booted the Pi, nothing else via USB. Can I check the voltage/amperage via software/ssh, or do I need something like a voltmeter for that?

You need a voltmeter, try with another 2A power supply, iPad chargers are ideal.

from my absolute respect and ignorance, I think that from version 0.6.0 or 0.5.1 there is something wrong with the software on the voltage/amperage:

  • RP1 b+ with microSD 32GB Class 10 and 0.5.0 = Everthing alright always. 0 Problems in 1 year. (Overclocking medium)
  • The same RP1 b+ with 0.6.0 or 0.7.1 = The lights flash random colors when I play a media file and hyperion logo (top right) appears and disappears randomly very often.
  • RP2 with the same microSD and 0.6.0 or 0.7.1 = The lights flash random colors when I play a media file and hyperion logo (top right) appears and disappears randomly very often.

Now, I have two power supply, one to RP1 (2A to the microUSB) and another one to led (10A) and 0 problems.

Regards.

I’m with you, I had no problems before - now I get the rainbow icon randomly when I play media. I’ve noticed it on 0.7.1. Have upgraded to v1 so I’ll check that

Note that not only RasPlex changes with the releases, the firmware for various components gets updated too.

I have upgraded to v1 and it has the same problem. I’ve plugged the RPi microUSB to the normal USB TV instead of the 2A power supply and the one works fine.

Not all power supplies are reliable with their power output rating, that said, try switching to a shorter / better quality microUSB cable, that can also have a big influence on the power the RPi gets.

But, Why it works perfectly with version 0.5.0 and from version 0.6.0 does not work properly?

Firmware updates.

Don’t use USB devices that consume too much power, use a good quality power supply (not Chinese as they are not reliable enough) and a good Micro USB cable, thin cheap ones do not carry sufficient power.

I agree. I don’t blame Rasplex. When I said “there is something wrong with the software…” I meant all software.

I didn’t have anything plugged to USB. Chinese power supply or not, before it worked and now doesn’t.
