Just bought a Rpi3 Model B, and right away I started getting that rainbow cube/square in the top right corner. I would get the cube while navigating through the GUI and while playing video.
Initially, I was using a Monoprice 2.4A Wall Charger along with a cheap $0.72 usb cable from Monoprice. Assuming the issue was the cheap cable, I went and bought this usb cable from adafruit. It seemed rate for at least 2A, so I figured it would do the job, seeing as my reseach showed the RPi3 would be sufficiently powered with 2-2.5A.
Well, I still get the rainbow cube while watching videos. It seems to fade away a little more then before, but it’s still there - guessing that means it’s getting more power then before, but still not enough. I haven’t watched a full show or movie yet, but it seems the cube goes away if I don’t navigate through anything. If I start navigating through the GUI, then it pops up. If I stop, it goes away. If I start playing a video, it pops up. If I just let it play, it goes away. If I skip forward/backwards a bit, it pops up again.
I tried disabling every feature possible (except SSH, which I need), I’m using ethernet (not wifi), and I have no connected USB devices (only the HDMI and ethernet cables), but this doesn’t change anything. I’ve tried decreasing resolution, stop theme music and other options that might increase power consumption, but still the cube remains.
So, I’m kinda stumped. I figured without using any USB devices, I’d have loads of power with the above mentioned cables. So I’m left considering the Official Raspbbery Pi USB power cord which boasts 2.5A & 5.1V - which surely would be enough power.
I’m just wondering if there’s something I’ve missed or if anyone has any further info for me before I place a 3rd online order and delay my project another couple weeks.
Thanks for any tips/advice.
