"Run a partial scan when changes are detected" doesn't work properly / Scan Halting

Server Version#: 1.19.2.2737
Player Version#: 4.22.3.

To start with, I have a massive music library and it take about an hour to do a “Full Scan” of it from start to finish. I would like Plex to run a scan when I add or change media, and only scan that media. It appears the options are available for this to occur, but for some reason Plex refuses to do a scan on new or changed media, and will always do a “full scan” if I am forced to manually initiate it.

A full scan will, 99% of the time, get stuck on different folders/albums. The activity circle keeps spinning, but it never progresses past whatever folder its on (Usually “CD2” is the name it hangs on).

I am running PMS on a Windows 10 box.

I have also tried looking at the different logs, but I have no idea what I am looking for, and can never find anything conclusive. I just want this to work properly, and I appreciate any assistance in getting it to that point.

I have “Scan my library automatically” and “Run a partial scan when changes are detected” checked, but I have tried different variations of the settings in this menu with zero success. I have tried searching on Google and on the Plex.tv forums, but can find no relevant results specific to my issue. I am attaching the logfiles as directed.

Hey, sorry had hoped some one would get to this I’ve been a bit busy.

I noticed you have quite a few large various artist compilations which aren’t named how Plex expects it - this will likely causes issues especially when there are a lot of tracks in the folder.

This is most likely why you’re seeing the scans get stuck.

Start here: https://support.plex.tv/articles/200265296-adding-music-media-from-folders and organize your Various Artists folders according to this example:

/Music
   /Various Artists
/Guardians Of The Galaxy - Awesome Mix Vol. 1
         01 - Hooked On A Feeling.mp3
         02 - Go All The Way.mp3
         03 - Spirit In The Sky.mp3
/The Crow - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
         01 - Burn.mp3
         02 - Golgotha Tenement Blues.mp3
         03 - Big Empty.mp3

This will help Plex pick up the correct names without having to resort to more expensive audio fingerprinting or missing or inconsistent embedded metadata.

Take the time to read the whole support article to understand what is required for the optimal experience.

Check if that helps the situation and get back to me with the results.

Thank you for the suggestion. I will start reorganizing the VA folder and see if that helps.

Much Appreciated!

Hey there, @drzoidberg33. Its so good (and hard) to see a plex employee to actually respond to a request on the forums.

Would you mind taking a look at another thread regarding this same scan issues? The new Media Scanner scans *entire music Library* on any change

I’m not having any sort of trouble with the scan getting stuck. But my scanner just began today to do full scans everytime I hit the scan button.

I use to add media on a daily basis, movies and music. I had never faced this issue, the scan would just get the new media and thats it. But since this morning, without changing any setting, I’m getting this full scan issue.

Since I’m not the only nor the first to ask for help on the forums regarding this issue, would you mind taking a look?

I see in your linked post you said you moved the folder location. Did the first full scan afterwards complete successfully?

Yep. I’m still trying some changes on the settings, but nothing seems to work. Every single scan runs for at least a couple of hours.

I had a guess that maybe it is somewhat rebuilding some data on the library, and then it keeps reescaning to proccess metadata or loudness stuff, but I don’t know, it doesn’t makes sense.

Which log files could be usefull to cover this question? I’m still thinking that my issue is different from the one they’re talking on the other thread. It somewhat looks like my scan is doing legit stuff rebuilding the library, but I just don’t know why it keeps doing partially at everytime I hit the scan button.
