Sabotage or malfunction ? The subforum for 3rd-party PHT skins is now disabled !!!

The thread title says it all really.
The subforum for PHT skins now has user permissions disabled, so no one can post in it.

I HOPE this is merely an intermediate step in reorganizing the site again, but need this confirmed.

Best regards: dlanor

The appropriate people have been alerted to the fact. Since it is weekend currently, it might take a bit until the error has been rectified.

Sabotage, really? There’s no reason for Plex to aleniate customers like this voluntarily.

please try again. this should work now.

@dlanor

While doing some other forum reorganization and cleanup the past couple of days, I did mess with some forum permissions in an effort to simplify them (with the mistaken belief that the permissions would be inherited in a logical manner). In hindsight, I very clearly should not have done so, since it caused all sorts of problems. (“If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it.”)

However, I’d already gone through and fixed (I thought) the PHT skin-related forums well before you posted this thread. I checked again and the permissions were all set correctly, but in testing, the ability to post new discussions/questions in some of the subforums was still restricted for some reason. I re-saved the permissions (changing nothing at all) and they’re working now.

No clue why the permissions (which were set correctly) weren’t appropriately being applied by Vanilla, but that should be sorted for all the Skin forums now. Obviously, if I had a time machine, I never would have touched the permissions in the first place. /sigh

Really!

They appear to be doing that little by little.

Yeah, starting from top to bottom and making it left to right.

Also, the order of the skin subforums (http://forums.plex.tv/categories/third-party-skins) has changed. Previously they were in alphabetical order. Now they seem to be in random order, but after poking around a bit, I’ve determined that it’s most likely ordered by post count. The issue here, though, is that the vast majority of those skins are dead and abandonned (and now up top). The only three skins still supported are Aeon Nox (me), Plex Black Edition (deadeyeflint) and Night (bkury) and those three are now at the very bottom. Not good for the users having the only three supported skins at the dead bottom of the list.

Also, I discovered to my dismay today, that I can no longer upload pics to my Aeon Nox threads (with the new release today, I had to upload everything to dropbox first and post links to those). That’s quite inconvenient compared to before when I could attach pics.

In fact, @“Chris C” , most of these need archiving, some have had no new posts for a couple of years, suggest archiving everything except the three mentioned by @MagnumDoomguy

I never mentioned Plex Inc as responsible for any Sabotage. That was your own inference.
But a more likely possibility would be site tampering by hackers, which has happened in the past.

Still, my hope and belief remains that it’s neither, but just a malfunction due to site reorganization.

The order has not changed, except that the (renamed) PHT Skin Development forum was moved to be the second one. From the third subforum and on, they’re all in alphabetical order just like before.

That was definitely a victim of the permissions debacle. It’s now been fixed; sorry about that.

A, A, M, R, R, B, R, S, A, N, P, A is not alphabetical order.

It was in alphabetical order before. And now the only three supported skins are dead last in the list. Before when it was in alphabetical order at least those three were scattered through the list.

And I second @NedtheNerd 's suggestion to archive all the old dead skins.

But then we don’t know where @“Chris C” lives, that could be alphabetical order in his language!

Regarding archiving of the subforums/threads for obsolete skins no longer updated, I think it would be best to do this only for those who haven’t had any recent posts. We don’t want to put any obstacles in the way of people who may want to update some of those skins for current OpenPHT compatibility.

Personally I see no need at all to hide away any of the old subforums or threads, as long as the subforum list order is based on most recent posts, just like it works for lists of threads inside a subforum. Possibly with the same ability to pin a select few subforums to the top of the list (like we do for announcements in thread lists).

Apologies, you’re correct that the display in that particular view is not correct (it is correct on the main categories page, where the skin subforums are shown in the comma-delimited list).

To be clear, the categories ARE correctly set in alphabetical order on the admin side (I promise!), so I don’t know why they’re not following that order when displayed on the parent category page. We’ve contacted Vanilla about that.

I suspect that the Vanilla software may be using a simple list with the subforum entries in creation order, which would explain why the newer most up-to-date entries are at the bottom of the list.

Simply reversing that list would be one pretty good solution.

Thanks for looking into it @“Chris C”.

Since we’re on the topic of the skins subforums, one last thing. Could the description for my skin, Aeon Nox please be changed from:

“Discussion of Aeon Nox skin and variants.”

to

“Discussion of the Aeon Nox skin.”

So it will be like the descriptions for the other skins. There are no Aeon Nox variants (at least not in the PHT / OpenPHT world).

@“Chris C”

Any further update.

I realise that these are for use in Plex clients competing with the official PMP client, but wouldn’t have thought that this would influence any decision to resolve this quickly.

Regards

No, the skins being for OpenPHT has no bearing. We just haven’t made a decision on what to do with them yet.

It’s mostly an issue of “50 things on the plate and archiving/changing these forums isn’t super-high priority”. It would be a bit higher if the subforums were expanded on the main forum page, but on that page they’re regular text links, which don’t interrupt much.

The display order of the categories when viewing the parent skins forum is a Vanilla issue (nothing we have control over since we’ve set the order correctly), which has already been reported to them, as previously mentioned.
