Same Files, Two Servers, Different Metadata

Server Version#: 1.23.2.4656
Player Version#: Any
I have two identical servers pointing to the same library files. One server records TV and Movie content into the libraries and its metadata is quite complete. However, when the second server scans the same files, it often has different and less complete metadata. For example, the poster might be different, or the episode descriptive information is different. In some cases, the seasons are not recognized and grouped properly. Are there any differences in the way metadata is generated for recorded vs. scanned files? Any other thoughts about why this is happening and what I can do? Thanks.

The metadata for recorded files comes from the EPG. That way it does fit your files better, because some stations use their own episode ordering which may differ from what is on TheTVDB or TheMovieDB.

Your second server doesn’t have access to that EPG data. So it can only use the season and episode number in the file names and then look up the episode titles and description which is matching these numbers.

After recording these files, you could “canonize” their season and episode numbers.
Or you’ll have to make do without metadata.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate the explanation. I don’t know what you mean by “canonize” though.

Meaning change the season and episode number to those which are recorded at either TheTVDB or TheMovieDB.
