Samsung S23: Resume function broken, always restarts media

Since ~2 weeks, the resume function on my Samsung S23 (Android 16, up-to-date) fails for all media. Clicking ‘Resume’ starts playback from 0:00. Issue is reproducible across all files. Same media resumes correctly on TV and laptop (Windows, Plex Web). Another user reports identical behavior since similar timeline.
Tried:

  • Reinstall Plex app.
  • Clear app cache/data.
  • Reboot device.
  • Tested on both Wi-Fi and mobile data.
    Any suggestions how to fix this?

Same issue on my S23U. I also noticed, when watching a show, that skipping to the next episode (when nearing the end of one), starts the next episode on the same playback position as the previous one. So being 23min 4Sec in E01 pressing the skip button, starts E02 at 23min 4Sec, instead of the beginning of the episode.

There might be a connection, as both issues are related to the playback position when starting media :person_shrugging:

Edit: I also noticed that the alternative Plezy client https://github.com/edde746/plezy has the same issue with resuming media, whereas the skipping to next episode issue isn’t present. So, maybe it could be a server and not client related issue.

But I only have this issue on my phone, on other devices it works as expected.

Yes, as far as I know it only seems to happen on my Samsung 23U too. I was just thinking loud, as Plezy is a completely different app for Plex playback with the same issue, which confused me. I’ve looked a little bit further and found some exoplayer errors (the videoplayer backend) in the client logs with some references to related to “positionDiscontinuity”. I’ll attach the logs.

Furthermore I tested changing the player backend of Plezy from exoplayer to mpv, which allowed resuming the playback as intended. Sadly not possible with the regular Plex app. So yeah, seems to be an issue related to exoplayer or how plex talks to exoplayer.

I have the same issue for some time on my Samsung S23+ too. I just checked my tab S9+ and the issue is also present there. I just noticed there was a server update. There is no mention of a fix but after the update the resume issue seems fixed but going to the next episode is still starting at the same position (end of episode).

I tested with a Samsung A54,looks like that works as expected.

Can I somehow log a bug for this?

Similar issue on my Samsung Galaxy A8 - it either starts at the very start (even though the resume should be respected as being halfway through) or resumes play at the very end, in the credits. It ain’t great I tells ya

Same problem here.
Motorola Edge (2022)
Server Version 1.42.2.10156
Client Version 2026.3.0

I reverted back to Client Version 2025.29.0 and disabled auto-update and it works as before. Hope they fix this on their next update.

Thanks for that. I side loaded the version you pointed out, and it fixed the problem. Sad that you have to revert back to such an old version and disable auto updates while we wait for Plex to fix the “feature” they added to the recent client, but I guess that’s the reality of Plex corporate customer support and client development QA/QC.

Appears to be fixed after the latest update on April 15, 2026. I paused on the android TV Plex and re-opened it on the android app on my Samsung Galaxy A54 5Z, and it resumed play where it was left off.
