Samsung TV artefacts and movies stops

Server Version#: Version 1.18.4.2171
Player Version#: 4.17.1
Samsung Version#: UE65RU7402UXXH

Hi, for 2-3 weeks I can’t watch some movies on my Samsung tv, because the movies are freezing and there are a lot of artifacts, I can provide u some pictures.
What I’ve discovered so far I can uncheck following settings from my tv:
->Settings → Video ->Allow Direct Play & Allow Direct Steam, If I uncheck that the video is working fine but my server CPU is almost always at 100%, I mention that I was testing this scenario alone on the server and with multiple users, the output is the same.

Server specs:
CPU Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1245 V2 @ 3.40GHz
Memory 16.0 GB DDR3

It should run smoothly!
I’ve tried also with my tv on wireless and also on LAN network, I’ve checked / unchecked Automatically adjust quality (Beta). What’s strange the artifacts start at the same point every time if I try it 100 times, I can reproduce this 100 times.

First Pictures is with allowing direct steam and direct play, movie running very badly!
Also, the pictures start with ALLOW

Second Pictures are without allowing direct steam and direct play, the movie runs smoothly. (pictures don’t contain ALLOW)

Also, I’ll provide the log.!

Thanks  and have a nice day,

Curious 4.15.2 is the latest player version mentioned in the announcements and you have 4.17.1.

Today I’ve checked for the latest update, and reinstall plex

Also with the previous version the output was the same… That’s the reason why I tried reinstalling plex on TV

Are you on the latest firmware version for the TV as well?

yes, all devices updated to latest version

What you’ve described seems to match with what is described in this article:

Does it make a difference if you turn off subtitles?

Exactly the same… With or without subtitle. I’m using plex for 2 years, using with this new tv from summer and didn’t have any problems untill last 2 weeks. Got to be something from plex side… I’ve tried everything possible… The solution is to avoid direct play on some movies but then my cpu from server will be in high usage…

So what changed two weeks ago that started the issue?

Nothing… I did not changed anything, but what’s strange is that the image artefacts are somehow linked directly to the sounds, more explicit they appear when some guy starts to talk… Every time… Juster before hearing the voice image freezes… Is somehow linked to the sound…

Some success suggested at the end of this article in changing the audio settings on the TV.

I can’t do this because i have no such option on my plex tv app… On audio I have only the volume boost option

Running out of options…

Can you provide those logs? I don’t see them in the post. Also, please provide the XML data of a file that is causing this isue.

Just some questions, this only happens when Direct Playing, correct? Does this happen for all movies? Does it happen with Direct Stream (but Direct Play disabled)?

Yes, I will just have to see how can I, because I taught that I’ve already uploaded logs just before pictures here :Plex Media Server Logs_2020-01-07_21-10-03.zip (4.0 MB) " is this what you need?

I don’t know how to do that… I figure it out here is the xml file

Xml File of the movie what is not working.rar (3.5 KB)

Allow Direct Play On
Allow Direct Stream ON
Output: NOT WORKING

you have log from this
Allow Direct Play On
Allow Direct Stream Off
Output: NOT WORKING

you have log from this
Allow Direct Play Off
Allow Direct Stream ON
Output: WORKING

Allow Direct Play Off
Allow Direct Stream Off
Output: WORKING but hurts my CPU so bad!

Here are the logs with some combination from above
Plex Media Server Logs_2020-01-09_21-35-08.zip (3.7 MB)

No, this is totally random. From 10 movies 2 are not working.

If I disable Direct Play and let only Direct Stream enabled, all is working fine, should I use always like this?
Allow Direct Play Off
Allow Direct Stream ON ?

As a workaround, you can leave Direct Play off and DIrect Stream on. This will put the least strain on your CPU as it’s only remuxing and not transcoding. I’ll look into the issue with the info you provided and let you know if I need anymore info.

Thanks, keep in touch :+1:

Same problem for me, only been happening a few days now. Before that, everything played fine (for the past 6 months I’ve had the TV). I have a wired connection, plex server is on my local network. Everything is just pixelated when trying to play anything.

Hello guys, still far no update??? I’m using @sLumpy temporary solution right now but I don’t consider that a fix. Nothing new?

Hello,

Glad that I’ve found this topic. Unfortunately I could confirm same issue here on:

  • Samsung TV Q70R + latest Plex client
  • Qnap NAS and latest Plex Server version

Movies or TVs shows stops and there are lot of artifacts. Solution is to disable Direct Play (off).

Any news?

Nothing new… So far nothing new… But this temporary solution looks good. It does stress the CPU but it’s better than artefacts.

I am glad to have found this forum, Honestly PLEX I am disappointed as a Plex Pass Lifetime User to see that Plex Inc isn’t doing anything about this issue.

Thanks for the help fellow peeps.
