Samung TV won't use embedded thumbnails on personal media

I have a library of “Other Videos” (Plex library type, not me hiding dodgy content). They’re a collection of MP4 files with embedded metadata and, more importantly, embedded landscape thumbnails.

The library settings are as follows:

Scanner: Plex Video Files Scanner
Agent: Personal Media
(Unchecked) Enable video preview thumbnails

If I look at the library via the web (app.plex.tv) I see the embedded thumbnails as the landscape posters, but on my Samsung TV they show up as an extracted frame from the video.

If I add some kind of filter to my view (e.g. Unwatched) then the library on the TV does use the embedded thumbnail except now all the items are in portrait so the images are heavily cropped on the sides.

Can anyone explain to me how this works? I would have assumed that the server has extracted and stored those embedded images somewhere so when the client requests the poster info then web and TV should be receiving the same image from the server?

Also, why does the library view on the TV display landscape posters initially but switch to portrait once a filter has been applied? They’re the same content type regardless of filter.
