Please help me understand exactly what’s going on within Plex. More than 40 hours ago, I loaded 23 “other” videos (each around 1GB) into PMS which is running on my Synology server, and they’re still being processed. It’s gone through several rounds of “Matching”, “Downloading” and “Finishing” of the same files.
Library settings are:
Include in Dashboard: ✓
Enable Cinema Trailers: Not checked
Enable Video Preview Thumbnails: ✓
“Show Collections and their Items”
I’d love to know exactly what it’s doing in the background, and why it needs to many iterations to do it.
All of my media (movies, music, books, etc.) are stored in /volume1/Media. In the instance that I’m speaking in this thread, the “other videos” are in “/volume1/Media/How-To Videos”
There’s currently no Activity, as it appears to have completed. The last Alert was about 30 minutes ago. However, when I click on any of the Settings, I get, “Server settings are unavailable.”
There was no alert per se. When I click on any of the Settings (General, Remote Access, Agents, Library etc.) I receive “Server settings are unavailable.” I restarted the Plex server, and now things are responsive.
Just to help out here, I see a few directories don’t allow user Plex to read them.

The best way to handle this is to set permission at the top most directory and add user plex then apply to “This folder, subfolders and files” (in FileStation -> Properties).
God ziggity! The Plex user had permissions to these folders, but it got changed when I give permission to a new account on my server. Permissions have been restored!
Is there any way to confirm this from within Plex?
There is no interactive way to see this anymore. A long time ago there used to be but as the volume of media being scanned went up, the Activity window became so busy that we couldn’t find errors in it anyway so it was removed.
The only real way to know if user plex can see the media is to actively curate the media once. Double check that all episodes / files really have been found and identified.
