Cannot add new movies at all, library scanning lasts about 1 second and nothing

I have two movies on Plex “Movies” library, only one of them will be scanned, the rest is ignored.

I can’t seem to load any new movies on my Plex setup, I repeatedly perform a library scan, but it only ran for about a second or so, then it abruptly done scanning.

Well apparently it refuses to be scanned (I guess ?).

As you can see, I have two libraries, but when I do a global scan, only “Other Videos” libraries would be scanned— even though there’s new movies file.

In this case I have two movies file— The Killing Fields (1984) and Hotel Mumbai (2018), only The Killing Fields would be scanned, whereas Hotel Mumbai is ignored.

I tried reinstalling PMS several times to no avail, it only recognized The Killing Fields as a movies. I’ve been scratching my head about this, what should I do ? I’ll be happy to provide you guys log if necessary.

It definitely was not a naming issue, as I also had Hotel Mumbai (and several other movies) on my local Raspberry Pi Plex server, it worked flawlessly without any problem. Plex recognized instantly. Below is a screenshot from my local Plex server.

The problem reside on my Plex server located on VPS— the installation also doomed from start, I encountered many problem regarding Plex Remote Access on VPS, but that is another whole question I’ll ask later.

If it’s Linux then this is almost always an issue with file permissions. You haven’t mentioned how the files are accessed but check that the Plex user has read access to the media first.

Well, both of movies folder have exactly identical set of permission— I mostly follow the instruction from here Plex Media Server: Won't find media External Hard Drive - Ask Ubuntu.

Note that I can stream The Killing Fields just fine, but I cannot add any other movies.

Please try and scan the library again and then provide some logs:

Settings → Troubleshooting → Download Logs

Drop that zip file here when you have it.

Also, your screen shot shows the folders and not the files inside (which may have different permissions).

You’re right ! It was really a permission issue like you said ! Upon checking the permission of two movies files (like the one you suggested), I found that:

• The Killing Fields has 755 permission -rwxr-xr-x
• Hotel Mumbai has 750 permission -rwxr-x—

After I changed the permission of offending files, Plex finally able to scan Hotel Mumbai !
