Scanning music library takes forever

Hello everyone,

My Setup is :

  • Device : Synology 920+ (at 40% CPU and 19% RAM LAN up 1kb/s and down 1kb/s while scanning)
  • Server Version#: 1.21.1.3830-6c22540d5
  • Player Version#: I’m on the website for now, no player

I got my synology ds920+ NAS yesterday and setup up plex media server on it. For the NAS setup I did nothing fancy, followed proposed options, nothing custom/fancy really. Did not open any port for plex on the router of my ISP (Free, from France).

For a start I added in the evening 83 songs, all in the same folder, without any hierarchy, the media scan was almost instantaneous, and I listened to some of them with the android app on my smartphone, and I was happy of the setup. I even tried three series to test the video : worked like a charm.

Before going to sleep I added approximatively 193GB of music with the “Artist/Album/XXXX” hierarchy, where the XXXX’s do not necessarily start with a song number, and launched the scan of the music in Plex. Only 35 new artists appeared rapidely, all from the previously added 83 songs. Nevermind I said, I went to sleep.

This morning, 38 artists in total, only 3 more than yesterday. The scan doesn’t work. There must be a problem. I searched with my pal google and came across this thread :

https://forums.plex.tv/t/scanning-library-takes-hours-just-for-a-couple-of-movies-shows/551078/76

dedicated to the same problem than mine, but initially for videos, but where people have the same issue than I have – media scan taking ages.

As far as I understand, after a ton of basic tests, some users tried to put their traffic on a VPN instead of their ISP’s router and remarked that they didn’t not have the issue anymore, which showed that their ISP was the problem. Then they used a route tracer, pinged www.plex.tv and analyzed. I did the same and got :

There is always the same pattern (circled in red) :

  • access to “p11-9k-3-something” and …
  • … two time out requests

I someone has a clue … I can provide logs of anything if needed, I only don’t know how to do it.

Timeouts in the middle of a traceroute don’t mean anything if later hops in the traceroute are fine.

Those timeouts only show that those specific hops don’t generate TTL exceeded responses. That doesn’t mean anything is wrong. It’s clear that they are forwarding your traffic, since later hops do respond.

That’s not to say that you aren’t having problems, or that there isn’t a problem with the network. Merely that the traceroute itself doesn’t indicate a problem.

I don’t have a giant Plex Music library, but I know others do. Hopefully they can help you more.

I would consider testing a small hierarchy of music, instead of adding the entire large library.

Well…did you try this workaround:

Maybe you should Update your FritzOS if you have FritzBox

Hello yes, saw this workaround, I don’t have that box type, I am in France and do have a “Freebox” (ISP = “Free”) and as far I can tell it’s indeed to its up to date OS version, yes.

I erased eveyrthing and reinstalled everything from scratch. And it is stuck again, after 431 songs only. It also crashed when I stop the scan, had to relaunch PMS on the NAS. Logs attached. Do plex guys read these ? (File removed)
