Scheduled recurring DVR recording of TV show not showing up in "DVR Schedule" tab

Hi all.

I hope I’m posting this to the appropriate area. My apologies if I’m not.

I recently installed an HDHomeRun LEX QUATRO (quad-tuner), and I love it. Yesterday I started playing around with the DVR function.

One thing I noticed: Scheduled single recordings show up in both the guide view as well as the “Live TV” → “DVR Schedule” tab, however, for TV shows that I want to repeated record (e.g., Svengoolie on Saturday nights), they show up in the guide but do not show up in the DVR Schedule.

Is this a bug or a feature?

Thanks.

PS. I’m running Plex 4.145.1 on an Ubuntu server.

Are the recordings set to “new and repeat airings” or “new airings only”? If the latter, is the show you set up doing a re-run that night?

Ah, what you said got me thinking. I had it set for “New Airings Only”, but once I set it to “New and Repeat Airings”, it showed up in the “DVR Schedule” tab.

I was thinking that :

  • “New Airings Only” meant “Things that are aired that I haven’t recorded before”, and…

  • “New and Repeat Airings” meant “It doesn’t matter if I’ve already recorded it – record it again.”

But I guess :

  • NRO means “Only record it if it’s the first time it has ever been shown”, and…

  • NaRA means “Record it even if it’s been shown before the current date.”

Cool. Thanks for mentioning this as it got me going in the right direction.

Yeah, I thought it was like that too. “New airings” seems like the ideal method to try to record every episode of a show on a marathon (Love Boat) or whatever, to build up a collection. But since they are all not “new” airings, you won’t get anything. What I worry about is if I set up a show to record, is Plex going to re-record each episode as they air multiple times over a year?

I’d like it if the term was changed to something like “first airings” instead of “new”. That might work better as a phrase, but I suppose if you sit and think a bit you may realize why the two options are there and why you’d want one over the other.

Gah, the more I think about it, “New Airings” might be the best term right now… “First Run”? “New episode”? Oh no, that last one is basically already it currently says. >.<

I suppose “Record this if it’s not in my library, but only record it once” is too long to put on a button in the GUI…

No, it won’t. Plex tracks what’s already in your library. If it’s already present, it will not re-record it. For example, I have a standing recording set up for Stargate SG-1. Occasionally I’ll weed out a bad recording; when it comes back around it will be re-recorded. However, none of the already extant recordings are.

I think the terms “New” and “Repeat” are fine, for what it’s worth. If I were talking to a friend about The Simpsons and they asked if it was new or a repeat this week, I’d know exactly what they meant. I think Plex being colloquial here with this setting is ok. Perhaps this is a U.S.-centric view though?

But I suppose if you weren’t aware of the built-in logic which prevents re-recording of existing items there might be some room for confusion.

Note: There is an exception to the above statement. If you have the recording configured to replace lower-resolution items, it will re-record it and replace the existing version.

Yeah, I figured out “New” meant new with regards to the episode, not new with regards to whether or not it had been recorded.

Now I’m just struggling with getting OTA “Modern Marvels” episodes showing up correctly (but that’s a topic for another thread)…
