Screen tearing/video freezing ONLY on XBox One

Hi.

I have a Plex Server set up on my PR4100. I have XBox One, PS4, Android phone, Android tablet, Windows 10, and web clients.

Recently (around the last couple Plex Server builds including March 1st), I have some videos that are both freezing video (but audio continues) or are showing screen tearing (pixel-ated scenes bleeding into each other) only on XBox One.

This is not happening for the same movies on all my other clients. Whether trying to restart the videos from scratch or fast forwarding or rewinding a bit…same issues, and only on the XBox One client. Interestingly, if I tell the XBox One client to force 720p from 1080p (original), it works fine (but doesn’t look as good, obviously).

Let me know if you need logs and how to properly get them, etc. One “bad” file is x264/MP4, 1080p.

I should mention, my PC, XBox One, and PS4 are all wired with GigE.

I have experienced this exact issue with multiple Movies and TV shows. XBox One S, Plex client with pixelated screens that bleed into other scenes several minutes ahead etc. I also noticed the only way to fix this is to lower the stream rate down to 720 2Mps. The same files play fine on my Fire TV’s at original stream setting whether they are wired or AC wireless. All Wired Gig network, Local Plex Server is Windows 10 with 32GB, All SSD storage and nothing else running unless I am working or playing a game.

Me too. PMS hosted on mac pro. everything works fine when streaming to Roku, iPhone, iPad, samsung smart tv, But Xbox one gets tearing and freezing while audio carries on as normal. I will try the downgrade to 720p suggestion, but that is obviously not ideal, and not a solution.

Same issue here but I’m running the server off of a windows 10 PC but the Xbox symptoms are whats described here… A fix soon would rock as we mainly use the Xbox to watch stuff… oh I found the same fix with downgrading to 720p but it looks awful compared to all our other devices that play the movies fine.

Plex is running on a W10 server, and I’m watching either with the Android TV version of plex or the OpenPHT client.

It would be helpful to know what type of media this happening on and the server logs for when it is happening. Previously, I have seen artifacting with playback of direct rips of my sony disc’s that all had a common value of 1 ref frame. The only way to fix this was to force transcoding.

Typically, when you see artificating like this it means the device isn’t getting enough information to recreate the image so it kind of adds in junk to fill the space. If transcoding fixes the problem, it typically means the player itself doesn’t like the file and the only fix for plex would be to force a transcode of the file as the actual decoder is part of the Xbox and is controlled by microsoft.

If you want to avoid transcoding down to 720p, you can also go into the app settings and turn off direct play and direct stream. This will force the server to transcode every video without forcing a restriction in resolution. However, as with every transcode you will lose detail, it’s just a matter of the original quality, how much gets cut, and if you can tolerate it. For me, the files that were causing issue I simply manually converted the video so the server wouldn’t need to do it on the fly which allows for better quality (then the on demand transcode).

Thank you Jmckee. This is a weird problem. I tested it today on two 1080p mp4’s “spaceballs” that I watched with no problem a week or two ago. and “revenge of the nerds” that I hadn’t previously watched. and both files had tearing. Spaceballs would continue to play even though it was all jacked up, Revenge of the nerds tore, and froze with audio continuing to play. Downgrading to 720p fixes the tearing, but looks awful. I am running PMS build Version 1.5.0.3501-3b8374a5c. I am a total noob, but I think that this is the log that you would want. I am sorry if it is not. I definitely appreciate you help in trying to solve this problem.

I also have this issue. My video freezes and the audio continues. It almost always happens as soon as the video is played, for about 3-5 seconds and then is fine for a while, maybe 25 mins or so - and then it happens more often. I noticed this started about 1 month ago (roughly), before then it was totally fine!

It’s pretty annoying hopefully there is a fix soon!

Add my voice to the chorus - the performance of the xbox one app has been practically unusable the last few weeks - Scenes have been jumping. The decoding of the stream has been horrible, soft, full of artifacts and lots of freezing. It’s only the Xbox one app, and not the server. Plex works well on my samsung tv, nexus player, etc…

I really want this app to work perfectly though. The xbox has the most power, fastest connection and when working properly in the past - plays back as smooth as butter.

I just noticed this issue yesterday when watching The Hobbit in original (34 Mbps/1080p). The issue went away when dropping it down to 20 Mbps/1080p. In the past I was able to drop it down to 20 Mbps, bump it back up to original and it would work. Not so yesterday though. Any progress on identifying the issue? Is it just a bug in the current Xbox One app?

I think it’s a bug in the Xbox app. As it worked fine for me with no changes, then suddenly started.

However. I think I have found a fix. And this fix seems to fix loads of other problems on th Xbox One (fixed my Fifa 17 game when it got stuck on the loading screen)

You need to reset the alternate MAC address.

Go to system settings
Go to network
Go to advanced settings
Go to alternate MAC address
Clear
Your Xbox will tell you It will restart.

This completely fixed the issue for me! Hope it helps others.

I tried clearing the alternate MAC address, but that didn’t work. Only thing that fixed it was turning off Direct Play/Direct Stream. So annoying as this was fixed a year ago. Not sure how the bug came back. Anyone know if a fix is in the works for this version? Or is the big update coming soon (i.e. within a few weeks)?

I also am having the same issue. It would be nice if there was an option to do transcoding vs direct play without having to lower the resolution of the video.
