Screwed up Migration of Existing Plex install when upgrading to DSM 7

OK, so I screwed up the migration of my existing install, so I’m forced to start from scratch. Unfortunately, I didn’t have a backup of my old “Plex” folder, so I can’t try the migration again.

Anyway, I uninstalled, cleaned and started from scratch. My problem now is that Plex server will not scan my “photo” folder because I cannot set the correct permissions on it because it is a special folder used for “Synology Photos”. I can give the internal “PlexMediaServer” user R/W permissions on the folder, but it does not apply to sub folders as a regular folder/share would. If I go into “Synology Photos” to give permissions, the internal “PlexMediaServer” user does not appear.

So every time I tell Plex server to scan the “photo” folder attached as my photo library, it scans for half a second and finds nothing. I know it’s a permissions issue, because if I copy my file to another folder that isn’t “special” like the “photo” folder used for “Synology Photos” it will scan the folder normally and the photos will start to show up in Plex.

Anyway, my question is, how do I give the internal “PlexMediaServer” user R/W permissions on the special “photo” folder and all child objects?

Thanks in advance and I really don’t know how I screwed up the migration because I followed the instructions to the letter.

If you hit “Repair” (the DSM 6 app was installed) then that’s what started this.
It is/was recoverable . You only needed to ask.

Please tell me if there is a “PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server” folder which contains folders and files

I ask because you might just have your server there but currently inaccessible.

Setting permissions for sub-folders is the checkbox in the lower left corner on the Permission tab.

I have the server up and running and it scans my music folder fine. But if you have “Synology Photos” installed it creates a special share named photo. If you try to set permissions on the folder there is no check box in the left corner of the Permissions tab. Try installing “Synology Photos” and try to set permissions on the “photo” folder, you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Also, I didn’t hit “Repair” at any time during the installation. I followed the instructions exactly and uninstalled Plex prior to DSM 7 upgrade and then used the latest package from Plex site to install on DSM 7. Migration gave me the permissions error as described and everything went by the instructions, but because I use the “photo” share created by “Synology Photos” there are special permission restrictions on that folder. If you install “Synology Photos”, you’ll see what I mean.

Right,

I missed that in your OP (somehow :man_facepalming: , sorry)
You need to make your own Photo shared folder.

That’s one of DSM 7’s ‘new features’.

Hi again, Thank you! Can you tell me a bit more about this “new feature”? I figured this out the hard way it looks like. Should I also uninstall “Synology Photos” completely if I want Plex to be in charge of my photo collection. I do have to say that the new “Synology Photos” as opposed to the old “Photo Station” looks much better. Not nice enough to kill Plex on all my devices though.

I would recommend :

  1. Decide which you want as primary - Plex or Synology
  2. Presuming you want Plex, and now knowing what Synology does,
  3. Setup a new shared folder of your creation for photos
  4. After installing Plex and getting your photos into the new shared folder,
  5. ADD that folder to Synology Photos app (so it can index them like it did in DSM 6)

Thank you kind sir. That’s exactly what I did. I created a new “photoVault” folder and moved everything over and added it as a photo folder in Plex. I also uninstalled “Synology Photos”, so hopefully I’m all set.

Thank you for your prompt replies and help. Have a good weekend.
