Plex Documentation → Your Media → Adding Local Subtitles to Your Media

Subtitles must have the same name as the movie.

Examples:

movie (year).mkv
movie (year).eng.sdh.srt

No but thx, it is not needed for subs folder and also thats not the issue. The issue is with sdh as XML extract shows >> Southern Kurdish. Using forced instead of sdh work as intended removing sdh works as intended this is a BUG with sdh in subs folder.

Suggest you rename per the Plex documentation, then refresh the metadata.

You may need to Plex Dance the movie.

SDH Subtitles in plex showing as "Southern Kurdish"

Server Version#: 1.41.5.9522 Player Version#: My subtitle files that are SDH show as Southern Kurdish. I have tried the plex dance but this is consistent across the library and the “plex dance” does not resolve. I have the XML here of one file to show the issue. I am using the “Plex Movie” as both the scanner and agent for the library. I understand that the issue is that the scanner is reading my file name and ignoring the .eng part. English SRT subtitle recognised as Southern Kurdish

Hello, I try to add a english SRT subtitle to a couple of movies. They are named with either en.sdh or eng.sdh. Still they come out as Southern Kurdish in Plex…? What am I doing wrong here? [SRT 1] [SRT 2]

Thx for extensive and detailed response. Following your suggestion it was possible to get it to work. But its not an quick and easy fix over many past folders, so I would like too end this discussion with flagging that the scanner needs a tweak so it can work just like …eng.forced.srt that always works flawlessly.

Tiny Media Manager may be able to assist.

I’ve not tried it with a subs folder. It will correctly name external subtitles that are in the same folder as the movie.

Filebot or other tools may also work.

PowerRenamer in Microsoft Power Tools is helpful for simple renaming with pattern matches or regular expressions. It makes quick work of tasks such as adding a year to file names, removing undesirable text from multiple files, etc

I had exactly the same issue and I didn’t realise that it was caused by the need for identical naming. But as fordguy61 said, it is.

As an aside I do think it would be helpful to the community if the page about subs naming was as explicit as the response from fordguy61.

I used a simple batch script to change the names of the existing subs to the correct format, to clean my library up and it might be an option for you to do the same.
