I’d like to add some adult content to my plex setup, but keep the kids out. I’ve read where you can create a 2nd plex account and share your kid libraries with that, but then they can’t see any of the content that other people have shared with me.
I typically let the kids login using the main account so they can see all of the content on my server and servers that are shared with me. Is there a way to add adult content and keep it hidden/password protected using this setup? I have plexpass by the way incase there are any features in there that help.
Under your icon there should be a Plex Pass icon. Did you let it expire?
You need to setup a HOME group and assign each family member an account. Then you setup a PIN for the “adults” (so the kids can’t access it).
Next you share you libraries with your different users. Simply don’t share your adult library with your kids.
The above setup will not allow your kids to view the content shared with you. Technically, this content is shared with you and not your kids/family.
So this will cause a problem for you kids not getting to the other servers. You have a couple of options.
Contact the people who share with you and ask them to also share with your kid’s accounts. They would setup a share for each family member in this case. Each person/child would then have their own view/watchlist.
Alternately setup a new home user with an actual email address and plex.tv account such as “southpointfamily”. Then ask anyone who shares with you to add this one account for you. You could also ask them to set up rating filters for you also. eg G, PG, PG-13 to keep the library “safer” for your kids.
You obviously share your “kid safe” content with this user “southpointfamily” account also. Then the kids use this account.

PS what you CAN NOT do is pass through other people’s shares with you to someone else. That is why you need to ask them for an additional share or three.
Thanks for the reply. I was hoping there was a cleaner solution. I may just run a 2nd instance of plex with a 2nd user account and share it into my primary system. It will prevent me from having to contact everyone who shared with me and have them adjust rating filters.
The plexpass is on another account of mine; the primary one. I hope they sometime come out with a better solution for this or allow the pass through sharing in plex home so I can lock out the main account.
Depending on your server and your clients you could also use Emby for your Adult stuff.
Basically use Plex for “family friendly” media and Emby for the not so family friendly stuff.
This way only you would have access to it. The reason I mention this is because you can run them both on the same server as apposed to running two different Plex systems.
It seems like there should be a really easy solution for this. It seems like a lot of people just use the default account for most all of their devices, since that’s all there was for a long time (and still is for non-premium members?). It seems that all that is needed is the ability to hide libraries from the default user in the server/library/user setup, in the same way you can chose not to share particular libraries with other home users. Then its just a matter of logging in to a specific user to view restricted content, rather than a special action required for “normal” every day use.
Since logging into the default account has been the normal way for a long time, I worry about having to go through the house and find every old installation of plex, plex app, plex home theater, etc on every device in the house.or risk having them open to adult content unintentionally. That might sounds silly, but when you’ve been using plex since the beginning I probably have 15 or more installs around. Most of which still work and may see occasional use. Which is one of the things I love about plex. I can still pick up our Gen 1 ipad with who knows what version of iOS and Plex app and it still just works with my home server. But unfortunately all the little people in our house know and appreciate this fact as well.
I created ‘managed users’ for myself and my wife, gave them a pin. Created accounts for my kids with no pin, they pick who they are like they do on Netflix, and only shows what I want them to see. You can restrict by rating/library/etc. I just put the adult stuff in an Adult library and only give the kids access to movies/tv show libraries.
I just use the one account for everyone. I have too many family members on my plex server to create accounts for everyone. It would be nice if there was a way to restrict content based on rating. i.e. R and TV-MA require a pin, but everything else is fair game. I really don’t want to have to break down my libraries manually into what the kids can see and what they can’t.
Not going to happen with the PIN access per library or content type.
HOWEVER you can create another user account which has access to all content EXCEPT for the adult content. You can allow anyone to login and use this account. Then keep your main (admin) account as the account with adult access and assign a PIN to it.
There is no use trying to fight the way the media server works as all media servers pretty much work this way.
