Worked like a charm, thanks.
The only way I’ve found to get past the “Reset Password” screen is to go to another plex page like plex.tv/blog. Once there, you can click the plex logo in the upper left and you’ll get the main screen.

You have successfully changed your password, correct?
If so, try the following:
-
If possible, check your list of Authorized Devices: https://app.plex.tv/desktop/#!/settings/devices/pms
If your server is listed, delete it. -
On the QNAP NAS, stop Plex Media Server.
-
Double check the preferences.xml in the Plex Data Folder.
Make sure the entries mentioned in “Why am I locked out…” are not present.
Your Plex Media Server is now in an unclaimed state. -
Start Plex Media Server. Give it a couple of minutes to fully start.
-
Using an incognito/private browser window, go to http://qnap_ip_address:32400/web.
Substitute the actual IP address of the NAS.
Also, you must be on a system on the same network (local) to the NAS.
You should be able to login and claim the Plex Media Server.
This has been a Real Cluster F)$*(#!
I changed my Password, now it looks like I have to rebuild the whole Plex setup. Nice going PLEX!
Changing your password does not delete any existing libraries, etc.
It places your server in an unclaimed state.
You need to re-claim your server.
If your server has a keyboard & display, using them, launch a browser and go to http://127.0.0.1:32400/web or http://localhost:32400/web.
If you have a headless server or are using a different system, go to http://pms_ip_address:32400/web (use the actual IP address of the server).
You need to be on the same subnet as the server.
If you are on a different network, Plex considers you remote. You will need to establish a SSH tunnel to your server first, which makes you appear local, before claiming the server.
I did everything you wrote…same thing!! Still can’t access!?
This is driving me crazy and costing me a lot of precious time!
So now what!?
(I’m pissed off but I really appreciate any attempt at helping me and consequently others as well since just about everyone seems to have the problem in one way or another)
Same for me. Asked for reset email twice but haven’t received anything yet.
I understand the frustration. It took me a few hours before I could get through a password reset and re-claim.
My best advice? Wait and try again later.
Claiming a server requires communication with the Plex authentication servers.
All of Plex’s systems are slammed right now responding to password reset requests.
Until Plex’s systems stabilize, claiming a server will be hit and miss.
same problem, but on synology NAS. Done all things above 4 times. Load up the local Plex media Server with stated “Plex web will try to connect to Plex account. This App was load from 192.168.2.128 and is not hosted on Plex.tv. Just go ahead if you know this server and will access to your Plex account” Login and then no server shows up. Just your media and the download link in the sidebar and nothing in settings …
Is your NAS running DSM 6 or DSM 7?
Edit: See Synology FAQ 15: Claiming & Connecting to a troublesome Synology server.
It has a procedure for both DSM 6 and DSM 7.
Claiming a server requires communications with hosts at plex.tv.
Those hosts are slammed right now.
So, no guarantees the claim process will work until the load on those systems subsides.
The process in the FAQ does not touch your media, server settings, etc.
If it does not work, wait awhile and try again later.
I’m running DSM 6.2.4-25556 Update 6 on my synology NAS
i would say yes…reason being yesterday i had a rogue login even though i use google.
looks like your local plex has a seperate password compared to the google login.
there should have been no way for them to get your google passwords though as those are not saved on the plex servers.
Damn! In desperation, I think I messed up bad!
The only avenue I hadn’t been able to explore to resolve this crap, was the modifying of the preference.xml file because of permission/access denial.
So in the NAS, I right-clicked the preference.xml file and noticed some ‘Write’ permissions were disabled for ‘Groups’ and ‘Others’ but was already enabled for ‘Owner’.
I figured I’d just give it a shot and enable those two other permissions and…disaster!
It looks like the Plex Media Server folder is empty!!? And in Windows, I now get an error when trying to access that folder.
Please tell me there’s a way to fix this?
I was editing my post as you were replying…
See FAQ 15:
That all sounds very complicated. I’m telling you that changing the PW did screw up my entire system and I can’t seem to get it back. If I wasn’t a Life Time Subscriber, I’d have axed Plex long ago.
I run Plex on Ubuntu and a Synology NAS. My knowledge of Plex on QNAP is limited.
Creating a PlexData share is covered in QNAP FAQ #28: How to use the PlexData share. There is additional information in this thread.
If I’m reading it correctly, the folder is a diagnostic aid. Changing permissions would not delete any data.
My suggestion is to
- Stop Plex Media Server.
- Revert the permissions you changed. Make sure the desired user(s) have RW access to the PlexData folder.
- Then restart Plex Media Server.
Hopefully that gets you back to where you can see the data.
No, not spam. I had the same problem. Had to go through the “Reclaim your server” process.
Ultimately had to use the 3rd party script at GitHub - ukdtom/ClaimIt: ClaimIt 4 Plex Media Server
NOTE for Linux users. Had to edit the claimpms.sh script and change the first line to:
#!/bin/bash
Thank you FordGuy61. FAQ 15: Claiming & Connecting… was the solution.
I am having the same issue. It has been several hours and I am not getting password reset emails for the correct account. Emails trusted. Checked spam, promotional and trash folders. Nothing there.
Lifetime pass holder. This should not be this difficult.
